I have actually sometimes thought about bringing capes back.
My idea is that you'd do it basically like the trend of a few years ago at Pitti Uomo where people were wearing no-joke blankets around their suits and sport coats. Pic related. So you get a draping sort of cape that's just a bit longer, like the mid-thigh capes Hitler and the rest of the high command would sometimes wear. Get it made in cashmere or heavy wool, and perhaps with a subtle weave like smaller herringbone.
Not only would it probably be doable in a modern context, it might even be practical.

Are you American or from a warm country with mild winters? I have seen several older men and women wear proper capes in the winter in Milan and Paris. >>1566596
Breathable material, staying outta the dun and no physical labor. That layered stuff is formal clothing, meant to show how much better you are than everyone else. Workers wore familiar clothing to what we know today. Layered clothing was also more useful before central heating was widely available, keeping you comfy, even in the winter, as a frog poster might say. That last part was particularly true in the northeastern USA and Northern Europe. Clothing in warmer regions, such as the Mediterranean or the US South, have required less constructive clothing to deal with the heat
It's kind of stupid that people don't use cloaks. I understand not wearing one if you need to drive a car but for everyone else its either wear a completely inferior product like the jacket or face anti-cloak bigotry.

It's absolutely amazing, though, what kind of change was wrought in just 20-ish years, the entire Western civilization was forever changed in the 60s and 70s for better or for worse, mostly for worse, and we're still feeling the effects of that. Unfortunately we'r also feeling the effects of the fact that hippies in the 60s and 70s are shit politicians today.

Even if you're American, you still live in an area that people, some of them at least, will give you shit for carrying a weapon.
Meanwhile in the early 19th century downwards, no one would.

Shit, I'm still stuck in the 2000!
Hoodies are the only thing I wear!

Just a prep, back in the day, and currently in ritzier parts of New England, respectable men make some attempt to dress well.
Most Americans are deathly afraid of looking like they take some pride in their appearance though. Maybe they don't want to look too French.

Victorian-style greatcoats. It's a pity most "greatcoats" barely reach your thigh nowadays, and if you wear them you seem like either an edgelord or someone who's waiting for the opportunity to expose himself to small children.

Obviously the cape will have a quick release system for safety.

>Ive worn a chiton out in public with a cute belt and shoes and it looked great.
You're either a girl or you're lying. Lads can't get away with that shit without looking like a fedora.

I have a good friend who wears a Soviet-era greatcoat. He's an old man, though, so no one thinks he's doing it to be cool. You just have to hold off on wearing one until you're at an age where no one gives a fuck.
There's a guy where I live who hangs out at gas stations in a wheelchair wearing full Union Army getup with slouch hat and a fucking bugle. No one thinks he's doing it to be edgy or to touch little kids' ballsacks.
Or just stop giving a fuck and wear one now. The reason people think you're an edgelord is because you care what they think.

Or you could just become Frank Costanza's lawyer.

>Walk into local coffee shop
>The windows rattle with each ironclad step
>Gigantic cape billowing behind me, indiscriminately sweeping cups and laptops off of tables in my wake
>Do not heed the sounds of protest, their consternation is beneath me
>Approach the counter
>The barista looks up, terrified, at a conqueror's visage carved in decorative bronze
>My actual face is behind the ornamental facade, as well as an inch of layered steel, carbon fiber, high-impact polymers, and advanced laminates
>Through voice modulation and amplification that rattles every loose object in the building comes my order:
>"ONE ESPRESSO, PLEASE"
>Drop a gold Krugerrand on the counter as payment- I'm not sure what the peasants are using for money these days
>Receiving my order promptly, I stand in the corner to enjoy my delicious drink
>Realize that the circuit controlling the face-plate retraction is broken again
>I must keep up appearances, regardless
>Raise the comically tiny cup up to my head in a gargantuan power-gloved fist
>The suit's finicky force-multiplication programming results in me smashing the cup to pieces against the front of the helmet
>Pretend all is normal
>Through the terrified silence of the shop, approaching police sirens are clearly audible
>At least my cape looks fantastic

The big thing stopping me is more that I can't find one. A casual search for "greatcoat" yields shopping results for the kind that's basically a regular coat that reaches to your thighs, and more in-depth searches lead to antiques that're way out of my price range.
