Assuming the coup leaders gain/had full support or control of the military then they probably would have done several things to hold the Soviet Union together.

The coup leaders would have instituted a very hardline policy and violently suppressed independence movements in the various Soviet republics. Gorbechev's policies would probably be been reversed and there would be a period of extreme political repression. Of course this almost certainly would have set relations back with the west significantly.

However I think the coup leaders would have probably had to recognize the collapse of communism in Europe simply because keeping your own shit together would have been priority. By 1991 most of the Warsaw Pact states had already thrown out their communist governments so unless the Soviet Union decided to invade all of Eastern Europe to reinstate them I highly doubt they would have done anything,

Economically I think the Soviet Union would have probably continued toward economic ruin. A hardline government would have driven off any potential economic cooperation with the west and probably isolate the Soviet Union further. It doesn't seem like the coup leaders had any sort of long term idea how to solve the problems facing the Soviet Union without resorting back to hardline political control.
