A lot of mistakes were made afterwards, notably those stupid wars between the southern cone and the middle bulge, but those conflicts were not inevitable.

That is rather easy. Not let them fall to regionalism. And focus their attention to the protestant countries (nordic) that were terrorizing the catholics in mainland europe. Because they were orchestrating heavily on french and spanish enterprises. Who were major trading partners. Aside a culture they should have lowered the level of the intellectual a bit and should have created a more country and brutal person than the north americans. But for the most part regionalism is an issue. Their land is not flat and countries are divided by thick bush, mountain and desert.
