He was found guilty on January 25, 1882.[29] After the guilty verdict was read, Guiteau stepped forward, despite his lawyers' efforts to tell him to be quiet, and yelled at the jury saying "You are all low, consummate jackasses!" plus a further stream of curses and obscenities before he was taken away by guards to his cell to await execution. Guiteau appealed his conviction, but his appeal was rejected, and he was hanged on June 30, 1882, in the District of Columbia, just two days before the first anniversary of the shooting.[

That leaves out a little bit of it. He had an opportunity to shoot Garfield like a week earlier but didn't take it because Lucretia was with her husband. He also, when purchasing a pistol, payed the extra dollar for the fancier one solely so he'd be more remembered.
Also contrary to popular belief, Garfield likely wouldn't have survived the shot with or without the doctors poking around. The wound and spinal fragments already leading to blood poisoning, plus his inability to eat, meant that there was likely no way he would've survived. The saddest part is his being assured that he'd hold a great place in history (IIRC Garfield was pretty popular at the time after managing to defeat Conkling and actually build a government) and now he's a footnote. If you haven't, read Peskin's Garfield bio; he was a really interesting guy and the bio is a great window into the politics of the time since, being Representative for such a long time and a fairly well known one too, he played a large role in everything.
