What can /his/ tell me about the origins and history of the Turkic people? Where did they come from? Were they originally Mongolian? What was their culture like before Islam? Is "Turan" a meme? etc.

Definitely. Micro-Altaic, that is just Turkic, Mongolic, and Tungusic has very little academic support, and macro-altaic, including Uralic, Japanese, Korean etc has basically none.

Turkic is a linguistic group, the khanates comprised of a bunch of different tribes and sometimes even peoples that weren't originally turkic, mongolic languages are closely related to the old turkic
