post only the best castles
this is edinburgh castle, in scotland. perched atop a volcanic plug. There's been some kind of fortress on this spot continuously for millennia.
During scotlands turmountous medieval history this castle was never successfully captured by force, despite many attempts.
Best castle comming through.
Also not really a castle, but a pretty comfy citadel/fortification nonetheless.
And now for a bit of variation, a Nipponese castle.
Roofs are for puny rulers that don't live in beautiful, sunny Puglia.
Do minecraft castles count? :3

I love the gatehouse even more than the castle itself.

Stupid question but did the nipponese fortress design ever have walls with accessible tops? Everytime I think of japanese fortresses I think of the tiled roof kind
the crusaders built the best castles.
particularly the french crusaders.
This is Krak des Chevaliers in syria.
It has 3 layers of defensive walls, an interior moat, and several 'death corridors' where troops who managed to breach the outer walls would be funneled and killed from above and the side.
It's considered one of the best medieval castles, from a pragmatic view point. Expertly designed to be impenetrable.

here's a shot of the interior moat and sloped walls.
These walls prevent the use of ladders or bringing the walls down with tunneling.

Krak des Chevaliers is amazing.
Rochester Castle is my favourite local castle though.
