Why was the USSR much more internationalist than China?
Did Mao ever try to export the revolution other than to China's immediate neighbors?
the ussr was all about the world revolution. chicoms came out of the anti-imperialist nationalist movement, with one of their top priorities being to toss out foreigners or capitalists who would collaborate with foreigners, so that they could rebuild china into a powerhouse again

What about "socialism in one country"?

Pragmatism.
The USSR was never supposed to be a 'country' so to speak. Originally the plan was that the revolution would spread outwards from Russia with Moscow as the capital not of a nation but of the international Communist movement and all the world would be a Soviet Republic within years.
In the years immediately following WWI this actually seemed feasible. Of course, when all of the revolutions save that in Russia fizzled out, the Bolsheviks realized that world revolution wasn't going to be happening any time soon, so they decided to concentrate on building up power at home before focusing on the rest of the world.

the RSFSR originally expected that world revolution would break out due to World War I. it wasn't a movement to make a better russia, it was just the bolsheviks taking control of a revolt in russia against the monarchy. when the German socialists tried to overthrow the government there, the russians tried to conquer poland so that they could aid them, and then the idea was that with the advanced economic and engineering know-how of the germans and the sheer size of russia (and a subsequent expected revolution in france because, well, it's france) they'd be able to carry out the revolution across europe and subsequently the world, since europe dominated the world.
when the german revolution failed and russia was utterly destroyed by the civil war, lenin enacted the NEP to try to rebuild the country, but they were faced with two paths from there: either follow trotsky's lead and try to remain the launching pad for world revolution with a militarized proletariat, or follow stalin's lead and turn the ussr into a fortress against the outside world (which obviously he screwed up later with the purge of the army before WWII, but still) and focus on building socialism in one country. trotsky and many others felt that socialism could not happen in one country because you wouldn't have access to the necessary resources and you'd devolve into a bureaucratic state. stalin knew that would happen (he argued against SIOC before becoming the leader) but took that gamble because he figured that if the USSR didn't focus on its internal problems and try to catch up to the capitalists ASAP, they'd be able to be crushed like a bug. so they followed SIOC and decided to just influence the rest of the world through sabotage, funding, propaganda, etc.

Because teh USSR was formed from the Russian Empire. The russians always were an imperialistic nation, the USSR simply continues that tradition.
Meanwhile CHina was alys much more closed on itself and even allowed Tibet to be their own nation for centuries until Mao rise to power.
