there's quite a few factors that deter large scale war between states these days. the most was the lessons learned from world war 2.

aside from the threat of nuclear MAD just ending the war in 2 hours, conventional war is unfavored as well.

mostly because as seen in WW2, modern conventional war on a global scale requires massive resources, exponentially more than any previous conflict. Trying to keep all the tanks fueled, 10 million+ soldiers fed and supplied, complete control of the land, the sea, and the skies, and possibly now control of Space, the insane strain to keep all these requirements filled is more than enough to break the strongest empires.

and in WW2, it did break EVERY state, the only powers to come out of WW2 better than when they entered was the US and the USSR, every other player either was destroyed or forced to relinquish their empire within a generation due to the damage done.

for a nation to enter another great war these days would be signing their own death sentence, as only the US, China, and Russia are even remotely capable of fueling the engine of war in today's world.

Define "Great"

Anything on the scale of WWII would result in nuclear strikes. Also don't romanticize wars of the past because prior to nukes we all just wished God would nuke our enemies.

I come between two thoughts, the first is that in the current geopolitical climate the chances of any such thing happening are so small as to be impossible. The other thought process is that in a long enough scale such conflict is inevitable and the destruction it would render would be unimaginable.

Nukes aren't the only thing that would cause a form of MAD to the factions involved.

There's also the risk of an entire collapse of world economies should a Great War take place. Currently, the only real sides able to enter a great war would have to be Russia, America and China (Europe too, but America would be involved regardless then).
With the way trade and the world economy is now, these powers dropping mutual trade to fight each other would result in disaster to both sides, and all sides.
