Why did society change from the conformity of the 1950s and earlier to the individuality of the late 1960s and later so quickly? Why wasn't it a gradual transition?

A lot of the conformity of pop culture was pretty heavily spurred on by the war effort as well. Wars are pretty inherently nationalistic.
Not to mention the creation of suburbia introduced a whole new dynamic to social conduct never really seen before, and I think its awkward nature induces that kind of conformist mentality amongst adults and individualist mentality in kids. The 60s kids were the first to live a near full childhood in suburbia. I think it was inevitable.
