This project has provided moral license to it's adherents in a way that no previous religious belief has provided, and so the carnage wrought under it's various incarnations is correspondingly unprecedented.
Look at some of the scarey posts on here; even now you have people justifying the extinguishing of a population because they didn't hold the right ideas.
