No it isn't. Christ is risen, trampling down death by death. Him dying was important, yes, as it allowed him to descend into hell. Death had no claim over him, but over-fetishizing the cross is mania.

Christ is the fulfillment of many prophecies and rituals. His resurrection was in no way a 'symbol', and it's an extremely vulgar statement to imply that it is.

"Christ is risen from the dead,

And upon those in the tombs

Christ triumphing over death and harrowing hell is amazing stuff but it doesn't make for iconic imagery.
There's nothing to explain when it comes to the crucifixion, the imagery is simple and self-explanatory. It's a man nailed to a cross and the man is obviously suffering. Which then makes pagans ask the question of WHY was this man nailed to a cross, and they're on the road to conversion.

Unless you're already Christian that image won't make much sense to you, and all the questions it raises require too much explanation to be an effective conversion tool for anyone that doesn't already have one foot in the baptismal font.

Don't get me wrong. I LOVE the image of Christ dominating death and descending into hell to bring salvation to the righteous but unsaved dead. It's just that it's Christianity 102 stuff and not Christianity 101 like the crucifixion.
