Inner Asia was no where near as bad as what pop history would have you believe. Outside of one or two cities, most of the cities that were "destroyed" were somehow "destroyed" again 10 years later, and again 10 years later..

It was a highly mobile society so most people simply moved with family to the country or moved to a different city and returned when it was safe.
