What's the best intro to law (especially civil and contract rights) out there?

Civil or common law tradition? Also, I'm guessing by civil law you mean tort law. My best recommendation, short of going to law school, is to buy law school casebooks. Law is really about practice, not so much theory, and reading about the practice (cases, treatises, etc.) will reveal the theory and the history of various legal systems like contract or property much better than a history-style textbook.
