How accurate is this portrayal of combat in the Vietnam War? Did chaotic shit like this actually take place over there or is this an over-stylized depiction?

ALL wars are 90% chaos and 10% an actual plan actually followed.

>Did chaotic shit like this actually take place over there
Yes.
>is this an over-stylized depiction
Also yes.
There were outposts on the border that were poorly manned and under supplied often leading to chaos and disorganization. In that scene it's cranked up to 11 as a metaphor for an unwinnable war.
My dad was in Nam and he's seen all the movies and he says the only one that actually gets it right is Pocalypse Now. Up until they get to the Kurtz and tribe that is, when it goes all 2001.
The Air Cav strafing the fuck out of the Viet Cong village, the shooting up civilians on the boat, the seige at the Do Lung bridge, everyone going looney, etc.

That's because Apocalypse Now is based on a novel by Joseph Conrad. Coppola simply changed the scenario from the XIX century Congo to the Vietnam war.

Indeed, but in terms of being like the war itself, the setting is everything. I am rather interested in Heart of Darkness, I should read that shit sometime.
Also if nobody's seen the documentary "Hearts of Darkness" you have to fucking see it. It's truly horrifying.
