Because in the past few decades Arab nationalism turned Arab into a nationalist ethnicity that precludes any others, when historically under the later Caliphates to be 'Arab' in the Muslim world was not unlike being Roman or American - a cultural identity. It used to have an ethnic supremacist implication during the Umayyad era where it was limited solely to those of the Hedjaz, but that quickly vanished.

Other than the Arab language, its about following Muhammad, not the Arabs. The Africans were attracted to the religion by Muhammad's example and for trade purposes. Likewise all those people in that picture eventually converted because they liked what Muhammad represented or to better themselves economically.
