What was it about the 20th century that led to two World Wars and a war so deadly that one wrong decision could've led to earth's destruction?

Was it the growing population vs decreasing resources? The clashing ideologies? Or was it the next step in our evolutionary path? It did hasten our development in technology and led to the formation of organizations dedicated to safeguarding peace.
