What are the best books/essays that critique the Enlightenment (e.g. that argue that it 'ruined' western civilisation)? Always seemed like a point of view worth exploring.

True conservatives would love for us to go back to the middle ages.

Bigoted people take something or someone they don't like and blame it for societies misfortunes

Everybody other than the Enlightenment thinkers hated the Enlightenment.

Post-mondernists, existentialists, conservatives, liberals in every sense of the word, etc.

Nietzsche and Burke are usually read the primary source way.

Blum's Critics of Englightenment for the French conservatives: François de Chateaubriand, Louis de Bonald, Joseph de Maistre, Fredéric Le Play, Émile Keller, and René de La Tour du Pin.

Berlin's Three Critics of Enlightenment on Vico, Hamann and Herder, for anti-rationalist take.

Horkheimer and Adorno's Dialectic of Enlightenment, straight out the Frankfurt School, in which they accuse it creating fascism.

McMahon, Darrin M. Enemies of the Enlightenment: The French Counter-Enlightenment and the Making of Modernity, for contemporary criticism.

Carey, Daniel, and Lynn Festa, eds. The Postcolonial Enlightenment: Eighteenth-Century Colonialism and Postcolonial Theory, in which the dichotomy between colonialism and liberation is explored.

Sala-Molins, Louis. Dark Side of the Light: Slavery and the French Enlightenment. Self explanatory, attacks Enlightement for being pro-slavery

I'm pretty sure you will effortlessly find many feminist critiques for the Enlightenment not being enlightened enough about women.

Well, you get the point: "Fuck the Enlightement", saith any one that isn't part of it...

Also, Enlightenment bibliography: http://pastebin.com/YhGuRFF7

Thank you, sensei. Looking into Berlin's essay right now

If a movement like the Enlightenment was big and powerful enough to simply be present in all levels of western society all over the world, of course people are going to blame it for things. It literally is the root of it all because it happened before anything else.

You might as well say that the discovery of fire was the reason for "Muh Cultural Marxism".

Political philosopher John Gray has numerous critiques of the Enlightenment.
