Christianity lost its hold on the population after the Christian empires of the world sent millions of their own men to die with the backing of the church (Got mitt uns, etc. etc.) and other establishments which is what gave rise to cynicism, secularism and the decline of the church. Essentially; the end of European world and the transfer of power to America, finalised by WW2.
