Why didn't America nationalize its rail system like the rest of the world? Conrail and Amtrak are the closest the US ever got (aside from the US Railway Administration during WWI), but even those were limited attempts at propping up certain segments and routes of the nation's rail system. And on a similar topic, why no massive electrified rail systems like they have elsewhere?

Railroads are public services/utilities like highways and canals and should be regulated as such.

but it's cheaper and faster to just drive or fly, why spend trillions upgrading the rail network in a country larger than almost every other country when different infrastructure that provides the same service is already in place.
