However, upon inspection of other records at York, it becomes clear that at least one of these witnesses, Joan Lawrence, had been tried for multiple counts of adultery and fornication. The other witnesses have names suspiciously close to known sex workers (i.e. Joan Semer being close to known prostitute Joan Semster).

Maybe they were in fact all innocent, upstanding girls.
