For humans social cohesion is the most important aspect of our evolution. Our ability to communicate and cooperate with others on a level higher than other animals has made us what we are today.

While you're right in those principles are important for natural selection, the evolution of the social structure has caused traits that promote multiple people as a unit and caring and protecting one another to form. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, as the saying goes. Neglecting or outright killing your weak links for your own benefit is the easiest way to make your social structure fall apart, and as you know there is strength in numbers, so this would be actively detrimental to your own survival as an individual.

Most communal organisms form communities for this very reason. Fish school together because the presence of other fish in close proximity increases each individual fish's chance of survival by increasing the likelihood of another fish being caught for prey instead of them.
