I'm looking for any good reference books that briefly go over the age of sail. An overview of ships themselves, battle tactics and how they evolved, day to day life of sailors on board ships, and even logistics for travels - how much water and food was packed per sailor per trip? for example. I'd settle for well researched fiction along the lines of CS Forester of Patrick O'Brien.

Interested as well

Six Frigates by Ian Toll. Although it is not at general as I think you are looking for - it may be a good start.

Not a bad start, but I was hoping for something more worldly. Most accounts focus on the royal Navy during the colonial era and the Napoleonic wars, with mentions of French of Spanish navies depending on if it's focusing on age of exploration or Napoleonic war era, so I was hoping for something that focuses on ships as a whole.

Bump. Anyone else?

>O'Brien

Whoops, too much Star Trek, I guess.

Also I just realized how little I know about the actual ships. Any good reference books showing the difference between a first rate and a third or the difference between a brig and a sloop? I'd love something illustrated.

Check out history about the chartered companies mate. Also Jonathan Israel

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
