Stalin actually implemented most of Trotsky desired domestic policies, such as collectivization of the agriculture and forced industrialization. He only balked from militarization of the labour force because that was too much even for him, it smelled of slavery. Trotsky, being a Jew who hated ethnic Russians, wouldn't have second feelings though.

The more interesting question is how would the U.S.S.R. ended if Bukharin came to power instead of Stalin or Trotsky. Bukharin was the one with truly different ideas on how to mix socialist development with a measure of freedom and market economy, ideas that would later be implemented by Deng Xiaoping in China.

I think the idea of an earlier Cold War would be far off from what we would consider the Cold War in reality - America was much poorer if we're to assume the depression is still a factor and if we also assume Trotsky stopped the Nazi's in favour of Communism, chances are WWII doesn't start to encourage Americans to significantly increase manufacturing and production within the nation. They also will probably more isolationist as they would look upon Trotsky's spreading of communism and just think "meh."

Granted, yeah, America was recovering from the depression on their own but I think WWII had a huge effect on how America became what it is today.

If anyone was to be an adversary against Trotsky's form of communist spread, it would be Britain and other European nations. If WWII doesn't happen, I'd imagine the Europeans would be more clingy to their colonies and be opposed to Trotsky's communism because of the fact that communism appeals to people who are economically lacking and are generally oppressed.

I feel that communism would have became more widespread if Trotsky was competent in his endeavours to the degree that it would be hard to imagine Europe uniting together to stop it like they did in the actual Cold War. Many of the Europeans would be at odds with one another because of a fully communist Germany and there would also be issues of individual nations not wanting to freely support their rivals colonies.

I may be talking out of my ass here, but that's my take on it.
