we've all heard about american and CIA involvement in afghanistan and pakistan during the 1980s which helped drive the soviet union out of afghanistan. what we've never heard of is KGB involvement in the south asia. For most of the mid 20th century, india, afghanistan and to a certain extent, pakistan were ruled under leftist socialist governments which were close to the soviet union. What I've always wondered is if whether there was any soviet or kgb involvement in the region to strengthen the foothold of leftists and bring them into power. Did the KGB take advantage of sympathetic leftist governments in the region? If they did, why do we hear so little about it?

i agree that pakistan would be kind of a stretch since bhutto ruled for around 10 years, but they've had socialist/leftist parties dominate the country's political framework throughout it's existence. india and afghanistan, i don't see the problem with those two.

I'm a Britbong and my first gf's family were Hindus from Bangladesh so I think it's nice it got independence since it didn't sound like Pakistan liked Hindus very much.

i don't care if the implementation of their policies were pure socialist. that's an entirely different debate. their respective governments were all influenced by socialism and their policies leaned to the left at certain points in time.

i've always heard that the soviets were involved in the liberation of bangladesh. the mukti bahini was trained in India, which was being backed up by the soviet union. the americans weren't able to intervene during the conflict solely because of the soviets
