So you have tons of these guys today believing all these insane conspiracy theories. You also have shitloads of morosophic websites that claim to have figured out reality.
It's almost like being mad nowadays always brings with it a radical belief in some sort of conspiracy. You can't find a mental case without him or her believing a grand plot is what they have figured out that explains their weird shit.
But what I'm wondering is the following: these nutjobs, what were they adhering before modernity?

He's not wrong, though. Conspiracy theorists are essentially True Believers who exist on the fringes for various and sundry reasons but many faiths all over the world have historically had a use for individuals with that level of zeal.

It is kind of a modern phenomenon though. Before, for these things to happen, someone had to get together and organize a cult or religion out of it.
Now, thanks to "the wonders of the internet" any too crazy assholes from any two corners of the planet can get together - and thanks to the 100+ cable channels and 24 hour news cycles, they can get broadcast time to boot.
I mean, for some of these things, it really is a one in a million people. There was no way for such fringes to amount to much of anything before the internet.
