I want to do applied epistemology/philosophy of science I have a BA but doing EE for the money. Should I go into Engineering for a bit then go into philosophy?

Why do you need to study philosophy at university?
>>
>>1139070

This. Total waste of money, just find a syllabus online and study it by yourself.
>>
>>1139070
already majored in Japanese/Philosophy in my BA, doing EE as graduate study.

what are reasons to go/not go into academia?

Just curious, but how did you come to the conclusion that academic philosophy is a waste? I hear that opinion quite often on 4chan but never really the reasoning behind it.
>>
>>1139163
Competition. You have a million other people fighting for very limited positions, and be stuck in awful temporary jobs involving a lot of teaching before you come close to having a good position. I think you also need to publish tons and really excel there too to get anywhere.

If you don't want to teach and really want to just research, now is not a particularly good time for academia, as the focus is shifting towards teaching for everyone in a big way.

Positives are the good jobs are still ones you'd want. You will just have to be lucky to get it.

armchair philosophy >>>>>>>> academic philosophy

easier to pretend you know stuff by watching youtube videos and wikipedia pages than actually killing your passion for the sake of being on top of everything.
>>
University is a good place to study philosophy. People shouldn't underestimate the advantages of discussing stuff with actual academics and other students. Just reading stuff on your own will not produce the same results.

That said, if you are at uni because you need the most valuable degree you can get, philosophy shouldn't be your first choice.

This is what I was thinking. I have more than enough money available to live comfortably for ~10 years so I am not all that worried about making big money soon, but rather want to study philosophy to actually understand it.
>>
>>1139215
I don't mind teaching, I reckon it'll be the marking that I hate.
>>
>>1139245
write a killer book anon, philosophy is what let us see beyond the simple reason.

Civil Engineer here, even I understand the value of philosophy
>>
>>1139245
There are lots of places that focus on philosophy of science that do really well with it, and it's a really interesting area too. Maybe do a 1 year specialised MA to see how you like research. There are also taught ones available.
>>
>>1139257
Ha, it would be awesome if I could find it in me to actually produce something of worth but time will tell, I guess. I actually recently finished my Bachelors in Physics and came to the conclusion that the natural sciences are not what I want to focus on at this point in my life.

>curious, but how did you come to the conclusion that academic philosophy is a waste?

I didnt say it was a waste, however the way the OP made their post made it seem as if they were going to study a third degree which for someone who actually needs money is a very irresponsible thing to do unless university education is free in his/her country and even then being out of the labour market has its own problems.

>what are reasons to go/not go into academia?

Not taking into account your current spooks

+
You get to read really interesting things and engage with interesting people.

You get to hopefully contribute to the growth of human knowledge which

Your work wont destroy your body

You will be considered an intellectual/smart by people outside your field
_
Chances are you will never have decent money or even then it will take a long time, hence if kids, a nice home and or travel are something you want you will have to marry up.

Because of the above people will literally work in this field until they die which means its very hard to get permanent and good positions.

You will have to study and publish in areas and subjects that do not interest you

You will have to deal with a toxic culture that places huge emphasis on personal relationships and loyalties to people and ideologies

Your skills are not all that transferable, hence if you decide that its not for you, it is almost impossible for you to start over a clean and match the people who didnt take your diversion.

Starting out at the bottom of academia is hellish. Extremely low wages, irregular hours close to no job security, outsourcing problems and vast amounts of baby sitting and essay marking.

You will be considered an intellectual/smart by people outside your field

thanks so much for this! I have free education so I'm all good on that front.
>>
>>1139634
No worries, I considered the academic life for awhile (in history).
>>
>>1139634
Oh and i forgot to add that if you reach the higher levels you get decent job security (well as long as education spending holds out) and travel oppertunites in the form of conferences
>>
>>1139070
Because you really can't learn it on your own
