i know the vikings used something like a sundisk, so in the middle of the day when the sun is at its highest they marked the spot of the shadow, and the next day they did the same and they could see how far north they where relative to the day before. I don't know if the vikings invented this method of traveling, but they did use it.
Also they knew about cardinal points, we have multiple of these ''ring fortress'' ruins here in Denmark, and the 4 entrances in the fortress is excactly alligned with the cardinal points, they were built around year 980.
