How about a /his/torical music thread?

Starting off with an unnamed instrumental sheet by the king Alfonso X of Castille.

You should look up the songs/ballads of Thibaut of Champgne. He was a crusader who upon returning to Europe, dedicated himself to writing song and poetry to be performed with the accompaniment of music. He's pretty good, and most of his works are up on YouTube, and the interpretations are pretty faithful to how they would have been performed (or so I've heard).

A little cliche, but the Epitaph of Seikilos (sp?) is actually a really beautiful piece that feels very immersive.

Are there any good groups performing instrumental medieval music? I've only found stuff like Faun and Corvus Corax which is modern music but with old instruments.
>>

Medieval music with modern instruments (and modernized style)? Companyia Elèctrica Darma has at least all the songs from the Red Book of Montserrat (Los set gotxs, Stella Splenders and Polorum Regina).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDPQ1K_qsfE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K66rW6UI-pE

On the other hand, you have Jordi Savall, who is a master of early music, performed with original instruments.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB2pOGaaHAY

The video on the OP is also his performance.

Sorry I couldn't find Polorum Regina by them on Youtube. There are 6 songs more and a Coda, in fact.

Is there any recorded medieval Islamic music? I've seen Ottoman marches, but nothing else.

I don't mean those generic 'medieval Arab music' things you find on Youtube. I mean specific medieval compositions with notations. Stuff like the Seikilos Epitaph or La Messe de Nostre Dame, but Islamic.

Anyway, here's a bunch of Chinese guqin music from the Tang to the Ming Dynasty (click on the Chinese text beside the names to listen);
