I could imagine in the late 90s and early 00s the market saw a flood of parody work enter circulation as the internet allowed aspiring artists to post lewd fanart and comics on their personal sites (sakura.ne.jp etc) and to BBSes.

Fuetakishi has several multi-arc original series that are good examples of this under the circle shoot the moon. Also BadHanD's long running Byakko no Mori series and it's spinoffs under the name tanmatsu ijou.

Yes, as explained in the OP, calling hentai one-shots "doujins" is wrong, because doujin means "fanart" or sometimes "original work by member of a fan group, distributed via the group". That is, it ranges from fanart to indie (not quite reaching the meaning of indie). Professional hentai published in big magazines is the diametral opposite of that.

"doujin" as a noun is actually kind of meaningless in japanese, it's basically an adjective akin to "fan-" (like fanzine), what you're talking about is doujinshi, i.e. doujin-shi that is self-published books.

So if you're going to correct people, at least make sure you're saying the right thing first...
