Is it even profitable to still make hentai?
Shouldn't it be a strictly better move to just release doujins?
When's the last time they released a hentai?

Milky studios? According to MAL (weird site to use, I know, but they had a list), it was June of 2016.

When's the last time you bought one?
Don't mind me but I'l just assume a role of an autistic bitch for a second:
"Hetai" as a term is used only by westerners (which I am totally fine with) and it covers all types of media. It is fucking retarded and confusing to refer to hentai anime as "hentai", especially in the context of your post.
When non-idiots say "doujins" most of the time they are referring to self-published hentai manga. But this term can also mean non-pornographic self-published manga. Self-publishing is what defines the word here.
Furthermore, a good half of all hentai manga that is worth shit is published in porn magazines which makes it by definition the opposite of doujin manga.
