Your translation is actually really solid most of the time, imo, so I just changed up sentence structure and certain words to help it flow a little more. I could do more, but I also have to consider that most of this will have to fit into word bubbles at some point, so getting too verbose poses an issue.

For the honorifics, I'm sure there are any number of people who would take a side and stand by it, but ultimately the choice belongs to the proofreader and typesetter, and if you can't stand their decision you can always change the language and typeset it yourself.
That may sound a little harsh, but I'm sure our anons are reasonable people and we can do a poll or something at a later date. However, that's not exactly a priority at this point in time. I'm sure there are many more people here who are waiting for our work regardless of honorifics, and it would be disrespectful to them for us to spend time and effort on a relative tangent like this.

I find that, at one point or another the author gives a small note, once in the series (usually the first episode/book, that explains what the word means. This both teaches the meaning of the word and retains the cultural relevance/tone of the language style used. I don't find it lazy at all, especially when they've just spent 100+ hours translating however many words into english for my consumption. But if you're translating something set in a Japanese high school starring Japanese students speaking Japanese to each other, in a highly social setting where honorifics are particularly meaningful, please don't destroy the original meaning and create new meanings.

And that audience would do best to learn the damn language rather than expecting translations that cater their wish to be as close as possible to the original text as possible. Because ANY translation - not even localization - will not be as close as the original text. That's not even the case in languages that are closely related (German and English, for example), and you can completely forget it for English and Japanese.

Deliberately choosing to translate as closely as possible for this audience is retarded on so many levels that professional translators very sensibly do not do so.

Learn Japanese and stop demanding literal translations. The only thing you can demand are accurate ones.

Errrr, no. I am here, and I never intend to learn or use Japanese. And there are probably others who like reading mangas and eromangas, but absolutely hate honorifics and typical phrases that result from poor translations (and that also includes typesetting for me - a translation can be really decent, but if the typesetting is shit it effects my enjoying of reading it - an example from the top of my head would be Saiyuki Reload, where the team switched in the middle, and the rest was gutter trash).

I already stated that I am basically bilingual; English is not native language, and funnily I speak it better than I write. And while I do not have an innate understanding of English, I tend to notice how well someone is versed in that language.

And a translation that is too literal lowers the quality of the result. While it is true that TOO much extrapolation makes for a retarded translation (again shifting to games: I literally cannot play the original English versions of FF6 or CT - I literally can't. The English sounds so bland and simple that it hurts), a too literal translation is even worse - because it shows that the translator did not put any effort in his work, even if the overall quality is better than in the "bland and simple" version.

I care for the quality of the texts I read. Simple as that.
