Someone did have their copy within a week, complete with the special Comiket-exclusive paper, but didn't have access to a scanner and didn't want to ruin his collection (he only agreed to the paper since it was easy to unfold and scan at a friend's place) For a while, all we had was phone images of the pages he made.

Meanwhile, anyone that specializes in scanning either doesn't care or charges for their servies. I think it took a year or more for tenchi20 to get around to that one PM Gals compilation of the early works.

I often wondered if Pokemon was a special case because Nintendo doesn't want porn of their characters. Imagine a mother accidentally buying a Pokemon doujin for their kid and trying to sue Nintendo? There's a lot of Pokemon doujins compared to some other popular series such as Tekken or Digimon. I don't think Nintendo interferes in that market.

What I'm actually surprised at is that there isn't even a single Yakuza or Ryu ga Gotoku doujin out there. It's pretty popular in Japan, has interesting male leads with Kazuma, Goro Majima and Akiyama and there's hot babes in every game as well.
Did Kazuma even have sex with anyone in the story? He canonically got NTRed and raises someone elses child and never makes a move on any woman around him, even if they're literally getting naked right in front of him and beg for his dick. He's an almost perfect character, but acts like a dense harem lead when it comes to the women in the story. Yet he has no problems fucking random hostesses...

I for one can't really fault anyone for wanting to get paid to put up good scans. I mean the scanner needs to get their hands on the doujin and then if you want the best scans they have to rip it apart. On top of that if you don't want it to look like ass you are talking about leveling and cleaning 18 to 30 something pages.

Most people who buy doujin like to have the physical books in nice condition So if they go to a convention to get a book that means buying to one to keep and one to scan. Then you are looking at a few hours of work if you are looking for scans that don't look like a slight step up for phone photos.

tl;dr: good scans take a lot of time and work, and most scanners do it for free, so we must excuse the sometimes slow turn around time

Depends on the artist. With there being digital copies of many works now, I hazard to say that they're at least hoping for some money than no money from non-Japanese fans. Some of the digital copies do have DRM though.

I know there's a big push for more swag available or exclusive art at the kets, so they probably make their most money from in-person purchases, then a trickle from sales at doujin bulk places like toranoana, and now with digital, they can continue selling once their print run runs out, since pretty much all doujins are limited in print numbers. Generally you can get some of the older stuff from an artist if they still have stock, but many boost the price as the numbers dwindle if they're a big demand person.

Kinda wish doujin artists would make their works available digitally in some capacity. I wouldn't mind the DRM so much either if that's something they wanted to implement.

But I've heard that doujins, considering many are based on other IPs, are in legal grey area as it is (apparently Japanese copyright law is different in respect to "parody", if I'm not mistaken), is that a barrier to artists doing that?

I know sites like DLsite and Dmm are available to- do they take a big cut or do some artists just elect to keep them offline? Or maybe they assume they'll get scanned in some capacity and end up online anyway?

DLsite takes a fairly large cut but then so do physical distributors. Authors counter this by increasing the price. That's why most doujins are sold for 500ish yen at Comiket but are around 750 on Tora/Melonbooks.

Not really, however the japanese companies seem to understand the importance of doujinshi for popularity, and as long as the artists do it mainly for fun and not for profit, they won't get sued. But you won't see major companies publish unlicensed parody hentai, because they'd get taken down immediately.

In the US that sort of dynamic doesn't really exist so as long as you stay under the radar it's fine but if any SJW group or whatever notices you're dead.

Hell, I heard some rumors that a game publisher commissioned (in secret) a doujinshi for advertising purposes, which while not substantiated, does lend itself to the notion that doujinshi are seen as advertising opportunities rather than IP infringement.

Though I do see some doujinshi and sets of IP hentai works on sale regularly- for example deep rising does a lot of resident evil and recently god eater, and it is sold regularly as its own work. Seems like they have a lais·sez-faire approach in general.

The only officially backed doujins I know of is the doujins done by Bastard's author.

Kazushi Hagiwara's rated 18 doujins got advertised in the Japanese Bastard manga tankobons under Shueisha's name.

He is the only manga author I know who somehow gets away with approval of releasing 18+ doujins.

Maybe it is because of his age or the fact Bastard is as old a manga as Berserk?
