It's only worth it if your phone has a really high DPI screen. Like at least 1080p on a 5-inch screen. Anything lower than that will look like shit, as all cardboard does is magnify the screen, and on low-DPI screens it just looks really pixelated.

I'd say it's worth it if you have a decent phone though, considering it's only $5. Get a head-strap so you don't have to hold it up to your face.

Those are the two high-end ($600+) HMDs that plug into your computer and run off the desktop CPU/GPU, there is also Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR which run off your phone but obviously a phone cannot power graphics in the same way a desktop with a dedicated graphics card can, especially when high-end graphics cards are physically larger and weigh 2x or 3x what a phone weighs and can cost as much as a phone too.

But to not answer your question, VR is literally indescribable, it's like reading written descriptions of sex as a virgin and then actually experiencing it for yourself, it's like reading a book on how to ride a bike or swim or scuba dive and then taking that first artificial breath underwater...
