Are there any good tips or guides for classifying typefaces? I'm going through all mine right now, trying to sort them all into folders, and I'm getting thrown off by things like the differences between grotesques and neo-grotesques, or old style vs venetian old style vs transitional. I get the differences in concept, but it's figuring out which group an individual face falls into that's giving me trouble. Likewise, how do you differentiate between Gill, Cronos, and Optima? They're so different from each other, but would they all fall into humanist sans-serif?

I'm willing to upload the folder once I'm done. It includes about three-and-a-half years of typefaces from these threads, and I'm sure most of their links are dead.

It seems that the issues you mentioned could be fixed with a chronological classification in addition to more conventionnal categories. I think you would need to differentiate carefully done revivals from more loosly reinterpreted typefaces. I can give you the classification used by my former teacher as an exemple, althrough I think it needs something more to classify contemporary typefaces.
