Greetings /gd/
For my school project i'm planning on creating the design for a mobile OS, complete with settings, lock and home screen and some default apps.
I've done extensive research on the topic, but i still can't decide whether to use Photoshop or Illustrator.
I prefer PS, and i'm used to it, but i'm not sure if graphics can be raster or is vector required?
I'm afraid i'll have problems down the line when adjusting for retina and larger phone sizes if i start the project in Photoshop.
Thank your for any help
Illustrator or Sketch.
Use Sketch it's better than the two for UI design

i knew this dude that used Illustrator for literally all his projects, so you could use that
if you can, there is Adobe XD
i use adobe xd over sketch. if you have the adobe suite then it's definitely worth taking a look at

You didn't even bother to do a Google search? Xd is free for both PC and Mac (while in beta). Sign up for a free (fake) account and download it from the CC.
I use Illustrator for all my web design work and don't understand why many other designers still use Photoshop for that kind of work. Illustrator seems to be more reasonable as a layout creation application. I get that a while back all kinds of PS effects, bitmap patterns and whatnot were the shit, but times have changed and you can create most anything of it in AI anyway.
i downloaded Adobe XD and i think its much easier to just use Photoshop for UI design.

Adobe XD is far from completion.
it's barely good enough for wire framing, I wouldn't recommend it for designing things.

Use Illustrator, it's much easier to manage artboards.
Photoshop is used a lot for UI but trying to do UI in it is a pain in the ass.
A lot of people are moving to Sketch, which is Illustrator but specifically for UI. So many so that Adobe made XD, their own take on a UI design tool. It's in beta right now, and when it's complete it'll probably be good, but right now it's not.
Sketch is the way to go but you can find so many resources online for UI templates
