I'm 33, no degree and currently putting together a proper portfolio after over a decade of dicking around with various design based projects and occasional freelance jobs. I don't hold out much hope of getting a junior position with a trendy agency but I'm hoping I can get lucky in a similar way you did.

yah I definitely got lucky. I work for a small/medium size manufacturing company. the jobs like this are out there for sure but i doubt youll be able to luck out with a "GD firm" or anything very specific like that. Best bet is to think of companies that have a need for things like that and give them an inhouse option rather than paying an outside company. That being said I know im in a lucky spot right now but nothing last forever right? Im desperately trying to go to college to get a degree...its hard as hell though considering i work 50 hours a week and have a 8mo old baby

Degree is out of the question for me, too expensive here in UK plus you need to do a 1-2 year college course before even applying to Uni.
I think the self-taught option is more than possible. Its just when you are older you really feel up against it with all those hipsters fresh out of 3 year Vis Com degrees.
Good luck with it. An in-house job would suit me just fine. Failing that I will eventually try and go freelance, even if its just doing work for crappy local companies
uh..cool?
I don't get the point of this thread. is it to feel good about yourself or get validation from us?
>>288014
exactly
plus im bored
>>288016

what programs other than photoshop did you teach yourself?
>>288017

Yes thats my point, a decade to make what my robotic engineering friend made at age 21 as a junior in college, this isnt very inspiriational.
Im proud of you though OP.
>>288029
comparing a graphic design salary to a prospective robotics engineer's salary is like comparing the person making a taco bell burritos earnings and a 5star chef ...average us salary for a graphic designer is 40-45k....i topped that by far with no degree
W-we're all gonna make it, r-right guys?
