Depends on what you want to achieve. It's good for creating documents that look academic. Example:

I'm working on a 3d model made of small components.
I remember seeing a certain effect in numerous videos (especially in videos about guns) where a 3d model's parts are scattered (for lack of a better word), so that each individual component separates and is in clear view.

Does anyone know the name for this effect?
I searched for every possible keyword/question I could think of, but couldn't find a single relevant result.
>>
>>267764
Nevermind, anon told me the effect is called "exploding".

What's differance between Illustrator and Photoshop?

What are the strengths and weeknesses?

I'm fairly competent in photoshop and design principles. Would I have to learn illustrator to be marketable as a graphic designer?

>Would I have to learn illustrator to be marketable as a graphic designer?
yes, specially now that a lot of clients are requesting stuff like .svg .eps, favicon icons, etc. basically illustrator is for vectors (lossless) and photoshop for raster images (photography, painting, retouching, etc)

Interesting.
The video you linked mentioned raster (photoshop) as being the best tool for editing which is what I use to create design work.

Couldn't I just convert my work to vector in illustrator without having to create them with illustrator?

I've spent years learning photoshop and don't feel like learning new tools.
>>
>>267852
Illustrators some tools to terrorize images, but they're severely flawed. They end up making jagged color limited bastardizations of the original image.
Think of it like this: illustrator makes logos that can be scaled to any size, while Photoshop makes pictures that are limited to a certainties.
>>
>>267847
>What's differance between Illustrator and Photoshop?

Illustrator is vector based illustration. It can create raster images but primarily people use it because vector is lightweight, clean, and scalable.

>What are the strengths and weeknesses?

You should use the programs to compliment the final product. Some things are easy to do in Photoshop and others are easier to do in Illustrator.

>I'm fairly competent in photoshop and design principles. Would I have to learn illustrator to be marketable as a graphic designer?

Yes, as well as InDesign.

So would you say that illustrator is best for creating images or components of a final product and Photoshop is better for editing and pulling togeather the final product?

Why is InDesign essential? I've created very good brochures and other company material with photoshop alone.
>>
>>267855
Could I just used photoshop to create my projects and use illustrator just as a way to converting the final product to vector or the correct file type?

Because Illustrator and Photoshop are both Adobe programs it shouldn't be that difficult to learn, I understand the dread of needing to learn a new program after spending so much time learning one but going from Illustrator to Photoshop and back again should be easy, they are both layed out the same, they have similar tools and such.
>>
>>267858
Photoshop is used (as the name sugests) for photo manipulation and digital painting (because it's easier to blend pixels and get messy)
Illustrator is used for design work (where flat colours are king and it's all about accurate shapes that can be scaled)
InDesign is used to get the elements made in Illustrator and Photoshop and bring them into a final product to print.

Yes you can use any program to do any task, it's sort of like painting in real life, you can use the same brush to paint a room and to paint a picture, but that brush is going to be better at one thing rather than the other.

An example, a company wants a logo, you make one, now they want that logo in a brochure with some photos of their new store. so you do that, now they want a sign to go in their shop window and a business card. If you did it the right you would have created the logo in Illustrator, fixed up the photos in Photoshop and then put them all together in InDesign. Then when it came time to make the shop window, you already have the logo as a vector so blowing it up huge like that is no problem, and that business card? No problem, vectors can shrink down easily too, doing it all in InDesign means it is easy to move everything around when the clients want changes.

If you did it wrong, you would have made it all in Photoshop, then when you needed a huge version of the logo you would have had to remake it, same with the business card and if you didn't do it all in InDesign, sure Photoshop can be changed around but it's a lot messier, and clients like to make changes.

I just have to ad a little thing... You can work together with lots of people using indesign.

If you are working to something with lots of illustrations, drawings, pictures etc, when you have a new version of something, you have just to update the file in the project folder and when you open indesign everithing will change good.

im trying to make a personal logo with my initials being F and L and I'm aiming for a broken chain link looking logo which means something like unchain your creativity and such, creativity beyond limitations etc.
I believe the idea behind the logo is good and with some refinement it can be used on any project, from print to a huge wallpaper on a building..
So I am a complete noob at Illustrator and can't figure out how to remove the part of the chain shape without having to use a white shape to cover it up and make it look so, image explains better

Indesign would be the best way to go if you're making something with a lot of text. You can create yourself paragraph styles and use other handy tools to make sure blocks of text are uniform without spending a disgusting amount of time on it.

There is no "make art" button. Deciding the size of elements is what makes one a designer. Make it the size that works for your concept.

Well, you could isolate the hands with a selection mask and mess with saturation and color balance, but frankly the best way to fix it is to crop it out. It isn't that vital, and the trees and such add nothing to the composition.

most people don't even know what's vector or raster images, it depends i guess. i usually work with a resolution of 4k and so far i haven't had any problems with clients. and i only use illustrator for logos or "cartoon" looking illustrations.
>>

Thanks! I am very worried about stuff like this because i got a lot of abuse in my last job and i was always at fault (we suddenly need it double the size of what we told you. What? Why would you need to redo the entire thing? Shitstorm.bat)
But it helps to know others are using PS as well and i am not missing some magical way to create textures and effects within ai. I will probably work with 4K, too, or just use 900dpi. Much appreciated!

honestly in both these pics, it looks like you didn't really do anything but apply a filter and add some text.

Im not quite sure what you were trying to achieve by doing this. If you just wanted a nice looking background then you failed.

>>272905
for this pic, your seem to have stretched the city too far horizontally, making it look distorted. When scaling pics lock the ratio. It also looks like the a blur effect and some glow type filter has been applied, I don't see any reason to do this and it could just be because of gimps bad re-scaling. It also looks like you added some smoke which was a good idea, however, its a bit too thick and is centered in the middle of the picture, try having it come up from behind buildings with light and heavy patches and move it towards the edges of the photo and away from the center.

>>272907
In this pic, all it seems you did was apply a gradient map, changing the colors to fit that of the text. The colors really dont work well and its just a bad idea in general. If you do want that specific color map, maybe try appling pic related instead.

>>272905
>>272907
In both these pics the text really does not work. In the first pic, it does not match the city at all and dosent blend in with the picture. Also, the sky shouldn't reflect the text like glass. In the second pic, the text on its side is really distorted and hard to read because it is sideways

other than that if this was the first thing you ever made then you didnt do too bad

Can I tile a gif in photoshop?

Like setting the background in html where it repeats on the x and y axis.

I know how to do it with static images and define brush patterns.
>>
>>273020
>most people don't even know what's vector or raster images

The difference is easy: vector images can be scaled without losing detail while raster images will become blurry.

This is why it's a good idea to create logos in a vector program such as Illustrator, so that you can size the up/down.

Then there's the matter of printing. The rule of thumb is that if you're using a raster image it should be double the resolution of your output device.

So if your printer has a resolution of 133 dpi, then to be safe your images should be 266 pixels per inch. If it's 75 dpi, then you're safe with 150 pixels per inch.

>>
>>273117
I'm sure there are other ways, but I don't know the context of that graphic with just that part cropped down. By the looks of it you could also just put the green stroke thing behind the flesh colored shape. I often use strokes to make certain shapes and then expand them to fills because fills are less buggy in PDFs and EPS files that you are going to use in other softwares. But this is dependent on the type of graphic and whether I need it to remain editable as strokes. Sometimes I'll keep a copy of the stroke version off to the side somewhere.

You have stroke options that can taper the end of it. I guess if you tweak it just right you can make it line up to the shapes.

it depends of your knowledge about animation and how good are you with software's like manga studio, toonz, after effects, illustrator, ps, etc.
it's not that difficult but it requires a lot of time and like most things a lot of practice. that flat design is usually made on after effects (there's tons of tutorials on yt) and also there's some useful plugins for saving time (like Duik, Ease and wizz and Move anchor point for example).

Just draw a square around the first text block, fill the shape with "content aware" as method and then repeat that for the other box.
If there is a border visible, use the healing brush sparingly.
>>
>>273205
>draw a square
To clarify, I meant using the selection tool, ofc. You basically just need to be as close as possible to what you want to remove so that content aware has maximum effect. I find rectangles and squares work best but it depends. For text it is obvious and fast, though.

The basic trinity is Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. To that you'd add QuarkXpress, and be familiar with Office (Word, Excel at the very least).

If it's a print shop you'd better be familiar with concepts like the necessary print resolution of images, differences between CMYK and RGB, color separations, and prepress preparation.

Good luck!

Ive had some ideas so far but id be very interested in what you guys think. We have no logo, but theres no way that maid picture can stay there. Also thinking about moving the text around to just maybe be in one column in the middle under a new logo.

Start from scratch! I don't think there's anything wrong with having a maid picture, as it's the general public that's the audience. So don't go ott and make some sort of StartUp logo.

Keep it simple, maybe a cleaner silhouette? Definitely some better fonts.

Very basic question that I don't know the answer to because I'm not a /gd/ person at all. (This also might not be related to /gd/, but oh well.)

Let's say I have pic related as a source image, the thing that I want to recreate.

I then have these three images:
http://i.imgur.com/VYHvXUo.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/zQCLI2k.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/pESupEG.jpg
which are just overlapping parts of the original/source.

Besides just eyeballing it, how would I recreate the source auto-magically? GIMP, Hugin, and other Linux tools are at my disposal.

I tried using Hugin, but I got a picture that was slightly too big, dimension-wise.

That's not the point...

I probably should have been more specific, my bad:

1) The images I gave you were just examples. I didn't need anything done to them, but thanks for putting in the effort, I guess?

2) In a more real situation, I wouldn't have the source file/image right next to me. I *would* have knowledge that the images are seamless.

3) And most importantly, the reason I want this done automatically is because I have a lot of (parts of) images, and doing it by hand would probably be a pain in the ass. Plus, it seemed like something that could be done pretty easily by a computer with the right inputs.

It's alright, though. I'll do it the long way.

Every time I mask something with a brush that has an opacity below 100% it obviously creates a darker area when you draw above an area that already masked.
Is there a way to disable that so that, no matter how many times you go above the same area, the opacity always is the same?
Also I'm sorry for how badly that is worded but I have no idea how to properly explain that.

How can I join two open paths in Illustrator—more specifically, I don't want them to join at the end of the path, but instead, I want one end to 'stick' or merge together at some point on the segment of the other one so that it becomes one single path and not two distinct ones. I've tried Ctrl J but that closes my paths. I've also tried the Join Tool pencil button. I've tried Merge from the Pathfinder tool as well. Thank you in advance.

Three things:

1) Do not choose a background the same color as your logo. The Diamond N get's lost quickly.

2) Chose a solit text box that matches the lace pattern in the background such as pic related and drop the text over it, you also need to choose a better typeface.

3) get rid of that nasty black boarder

How do I change the flag color to white while still keeping the texture of the flag?
>>
>>270548
I believe its because PNG compression allows you to specify a "background color" and not store specific pixel hue values and instead just point to the one background one.

And when you changed it, they could no longer point to the bg color.
>>
>>278008
Easy, just have a good portfolio, resume, and maybe some references.

>>278017
Use frequency separation to isolate the texture and the color on two separate layers, then edit the colors beneath to match the desired colors.

I'm graduating this Fall with my BS in Graphic Design and was wondering how to get ahead of the game when it comes to freelancing. The problem is is that I don't really know where to begin. I already have two clients I know through friends that want my help; one has a video project in mind and the other wants my help with branding his idea for a company. I've already been doing some research, but any help here would be greatly appreciated. I have a few questions that might help summarize my confusion...

Do you need a business license to start freelancing? How do you estimate prices effectively and fairly through value-based pricing (I'm trying to stay away from hourly pay rates)? Are there any online resources or books that you all would recommend on the matter of freelancing, prices, selling yourself, etc.?

Hey /gd/,

I really need to know something since I'm about to make a banner for a company that they'll use for their own flyer to sell stuff.

Now I can't really say why exactly but I want to to use Pikachu in that banner because Pokemon Go.

And there's my problem, if I'd draw that Pikachu myself and would change some things like giving it sunglasses maybe draw the tail differently etc.; could I put it in there without breaking any copyright laws or should I just scrap that idea?

That's called creating a bootleg anon. It's still a copyright infringement and I don't think you can claim fair use.
>>
>>278588

I'd like to attempt getting a graphic design degree at the college I'm going to this fall but I noticed that the degree requires a few photography classes instead of the studio art courses. I enjoy drawing a lot and took a couple introductory classes for using photoshop but does graphic design generally lean more towards using photos and realism? Is there any advantage I could have with knowing how to traditionally art or am I going in blind?
>>
alright alright

>>278719
Knowing something is always an advantage anon (omg so deep). More seriously classical fine arts are very very rarely used in graphic design, but digital illustration, printmaking and sketching often are.

Graphic design is based on typography, abstract imagery, and crafts. You won't get to do much figure drawing, but you aren't forced to use photos at all either (pic related is an example of the kind of stuff you'll do in a gd program).

>>278656
thick glossy paper is the standard for a basic poster, but there is no best. Choose whatever looks best to you.

>>278601
not sure what to tell you man, a common thread of the DG aesthetic is that their designs are random and don't have any thought put into it. Throw a lot of random distorting effects at a picture in photoshop, and it will look like this eventually.

>>278588
Pikachu is a trademarked mascot, you can't legally use it even modified. Plenty of people do though, and Nintendo rarely bother suing them.

Knowing how to draw is great if some of the jobs you want need Illustration, for posters, digital vector art, t-shirt designs, etc. But in short yeah photos like stock ones are used a whole lot more.

Alright so this is probably a really stupid question but I'm about to switch to a new PC at work and want to take most of my saved fonts, brushes, actions etc. with me.

Now with fonts I will probably just copy all the fonts I have currently in the system folder and work from there but I'm not sure how I should move my brushes and textures for example.
I usually added brushes the lazy way, as in I just clicked on the .abr file but didn't actually move the file into the proper PS folder. Now they're all still active in PS itself but from what I've seen they don't seem to be saved somewhere.

Is there a way I can find or export them or something?

Not sure if this is a /gd/ question, since it's more photo editing then graphic design, but this board is the closest 4chan has to one for this

I'm a GIMP user, but I need to know the name of that one really amazing PS function that was added in like CS4 or 5 that was essentially a context sentive automated fill tool.

Like, if you had a photo of a person laying in a field of flowers, you could cut out the person, select the blank space left,l sample the flowers beside it, and it would photorealstically fill in the space with flowers swith almost no mandual adjusiting.

Also, what's the best way to pirate/torrent the most recent version of PS plus all the pro/advanced features prior to when they went subscription?
>>
>>279363
Content aware fill?
>>
>>279388
Maybe.

Anyways, on a similar note/why I asked that to begin with, I need that feature for something i'm working on and GIMP isn't cutting it.

What's the best/easiest to deal with torrent to pirate CS6 and all the extra shit that comes with the pro additions, along with Illustrator?
