Is it me, or has the overall quality of posts on /g/ declined significantly over the last 5 years? I'm a newfag, only started using /g/ in 2012.
>>
>>62433367
What is this "quality" you're talking about?
>>
I'm much newer to /g/, but I've noticed a discernable drop in quality since my earlier /g/ days.
4chan as a whole has gotten more shit, for sure, though.
>>
when you stop telling people to adhere to individual board culture, guess what happens?
also you're part of the second stage of decline
>>
Generals killed 4chan. Thanks for making /vg/ then leaving, faggot.
>>
Flood of new people killing board culture.
Shitposts that aren't deleted.
Board rules that aren't followed.
>>
>>62433367
It's good though. The more technically ignorant people like macfags and gaymers here, the more jobs for techies and more money. The only problem is ubiquitous pajeets.
>>
>>62433539
No it isn't. Do you know how soul crushing it is to work in customer support? Or to develop shit and constantly have to alter your vision because people are too fucking retarded?
So shut the fuck up about opening tech up to normies being a good thing.
>>

when did anybody ever follow board rules lol

This and banning desktop threads.

I think it's because in the early days computers were more a geek thing, now any kid with an iToy consider to share his insightful opinion about consumer electronics, they're flooding social media.

You stupid nigger, a desktop and a wallpaper aren't the same thing.

Desktop threads are about usability and creating the ultimate user experience, not about what picture is on the root window. kys yourself because you're the kind of person that didn't understand desktop threads in the first place and probably was half the reason they were banned.
>>
>>62433508
>I want 10 different versions of the same thread at all times
>I like pretending desktop threads weren't a problem

generals helped manage boards that were already shit quality. 4chan was never good, and if it was it turned to shit way before generals.

Having to work in tech support is your fault. Also ironic that you will bring up your shitty, smelly opinion on "normies" yet if it wasn't for them, you probably wouldn't have been able to get into it at all since a base model desktop in the 90s cost $3,000 and that's not adjusted for inflation. Also you were probably the "normies" who caused the similar shit meme of muhseptember wherein usenet turds can't cite what was so superior about it before. But it's okay, just have the same fucking thread where you pretend to be old and call everyone kid. Also just because you showed up first, doesn't give you the right to run the show. More normies online makes it even easier to sell them software. If you aren't doing this or selling them something, you're a fucking loser
>>
>>62433730
Generals are inherently shit. Because they always lead to being tripfags circlejerks and nobody except their small circle will post in them.
>>
>>62433720
I was reading 4chan during the oldfag period and made only one post about a japanese final fantasy commercial. Because of that limited interaction, I'm not a qualified oldfag. Everything after that I was "around" for.

Pol killed it. Not generals. We had generals for years.
>>
>>62433803
Yes I'm mentally ill because I disagree with your bullshit. Big problem here is you haven't even listed yet how you're different from "the normies". all you do in these threads is just call everyone kid and normie because you've fucking failed hard and you are slowly realizing it and want to pine for a time you still had potential.

You're quite the same as the macfag on macrumors who said the same thing, wanting apple shit to be even more expensive because he just wanted it to be a made up exclusive club.

Been on 4chan since early 2004. Technically earlier since I followed it from SomethingAwful when it went public and moot was using it as a way to store and share his hentai collection since he couldn't exactly use his house's primary computer. So in the earliest days unless you were in various catagorized hentai boards and shitty anime/manga translations 4chan was a shitfest.

But anyway, /g/ was initially for guro, basically sexualized gore manga. When it turned to /g/ this board was spammed with guro images quite often in protest and even afterwards no one really cared about it. It wasn't until techies from /b/ kept getting their threads about computer hardware deleted and told to gtfo and to post in /g/ that people started using it.

I mean, I think if anything this board has just become "softer in tone". What I mean is that before this place was for thick skinned people from /b/ who were desensitized to all the fucked up stuff the internet had to offer. Mix that with the fact the majority of the users at the time were angsty teenagers and you get a very blunt and somewhat hostile atmosphere where circlejerking was shunned. It was basically concentration of antisocial techies from an already antisocial /b/.

But to answer your question, arguing over intel vs amd has always been a /g/ thing. 4chans popularity is what softened the board like anything else that gets popular. Then again I mean /g/ as we know it wasn't even out until like 2005?
>>
>>62433888
Cool cat and cool trips.
>>
>>62433762
His salient point wrong. Normalfags and advertisers categorically ruined the internet. This happened way before 4chan though.

You're full of shit about desktops by the way. My first family mid-range HP computer cost more or less the same as they do now.
>>
>>62433582
When desktop threads was banned then everything went to shit. Desktop threads were the main source of creativity and sharing knowledge on how to do interesting things with the desktops in particular, but the OS in general. This enthusiasm and creativity spread everywhere, but now it's just an advertisement platform for Indians on Microsoft's and Apple's payroll
>>
allowing the rampant consumerism to thrive in /g/ has killed /g/. I don't know about other boards they have different problems.

I notice the softer tone too. "Edgy" has kind of become a stealth reddit term for "stop being offensive". I've even noticed that on blue boards its not uncommon for someone to say "homophobe" unironically when being called a faggot. I think its probably the Redditization of the board but it might also be that high school kids are trained to content police themselves.

In a weird twist of irony 4chan used to be big on grammar. I'm really bad at spelling and grammar myself. But I remember a time when people got shit on for not capitalizing their sentences, spelling shit wrong, making pointless line breaks, and generally typing like a retard. Now its complete acceptable to be a phone poster.

Yeah, I agree. It's all just bad arguments and shit wit replies wrapped up as internet memes. I would've gone into all that but I felt my post was already a bit too long. But yeah, the softening I was refering affected all things including discourse. When I said circlejerking was sort of universally shunned on the board (as a sign that you were basically trying to gab your way out of an issue rather than addressing it) that is one of the aspects of it. Everyone here had enough of normie social etiquette so trying to digitally show your ass was always looked down upon. /g/'s image for a long time was thought of as akin to an old man with a dry sense of humor. I know that sounds retarded but it's how I seriously felt about the board in its early days.

lol I know exactly what you mean. I'm posting this from a phone and early 2000 online culture is the #1 reason I am so anal about my grammar online. One of the biggest ways to get shit on online was to be shit at typing and spelling lol. Pretty sure it was the antithesis to 1337 speak of the 90s once normies ruined that too. Because this is a technology board. People post wallpapers in /w/ (not necessarily desktop wallpapers), they do image editing, cropping, put renders in backgrounds, this kind of stuff.

They don't discuss linux, window managers, desktop environments, hackintosh, font rendering or anything more technical there. /g/'s desktop threads never were wallpaper sharing threads, there is no reason for them to be on /w/.

And the last, there is the cultural aspect. It was used to be on /g/, and /g/ users posted in it, not /w/ users. The janitor essentially killed the most active thread of this board.

Yes. During his farewell, Q & A, Moot himself remarked on how quality has gone downhill since he started 4chan. He specifically said that posts have gotten shorter and that users were treating the site more like a chat room than a forum. If you ask me, this is entirely due to the influx of phoneposters. More than 50% of the messages on 4chan are made by a mobile device. Not only do phones make typing longer messages more difficult, but the average phone poster is likely to be of less intelligence than a desktop poster. Also, you can't make OC on a phone.

So, to sum it all up, niggertech ruins everything.

Result: site became curated based on what will bring the most people over (for profit reason), such as by only allowing bait threads, marketers, etc. while killing all legitimate discussion.

This is something I have been noticing as well. With all things, including 4chan, the more prevalent something becomes and the more widely it is used the more watered down it has to become to appease the masses that now use it. When money is involved this is inevitable. With 4chan it is particularly bad as well, given that the whole point of this board is its users and so its users naturally guide what it becomes.

Leaving out the "pajeet meme", I have noticed a lot of programmers/coders looking at lower level languages as a sort of mythical beast that one day they'll tame but not now because... Have the days of cutting your teeth on C and Assembly passed? Have "enterprise level" languages REALLY become the norm, to the point that the majority of computer programmers have never manually debugged anything?

I thought this was going to be a problem when people started separating "programmer" and "software engineer" and even went so far as to say they do different things.

"Well yeah, a programmer is just a code monkey who makes less and does less. While I am a SOFTWARE ENGINEER, I DESIGN stuff, and know about FRAMEWORKS, and do a lot more MANAGERIAL TASKS and PAPERWORK."

It's like.. dude, a company pays you to work on software. I'm pretty sure even those "code monkeys" still plan out their code, still research answers to problems, still use reference books, still use stack overflow and have Jon Skeet come by to tell you why the popcorn you ate last night is more related to the kernel your computer uses than the answer is to the question you are asking.

Maybe I'm just being a cynical prick, but the whole industry seems to have fallen to the MBAs.

4chan doesn't degrade or improve over time. Quality of posts do not rise or fall over long periods of time. They rise and fall over short periods which then normalize.

There has never been an instance in which any board positively changed quality, excluding new boards that haven't reached a month or two yet. The only exception to this was those couple of years on /hc/ when literally every post made on that board was computer generated.

The word newfag was originally coined because during the last week of May/first week of June 2006, the population of the board probably more than doubled (rate of posting sure did). People were not called newfags because they were new, they were called newfags because it was obvious that they were new. It doesn't have anything to do with actual amount of time you spent on the site, it has to do with how poorly you understand how the site works.

The last half of 2006 was positively the worst time to ever be on 4chan. You had to browse only /d/ to be unaffected or something. Nothing you have ever seen this site produce was as bad. Even this eventually normalized.

You've gotten older and 4chan has gotten younger.

Things change.

I haven't been on 4chan a crazy amount of time, only since 2011. When I first started browsing I'd always see posts bitching about how 4chan was dying. For me, /sp/ was the funnest shit on earth and so was /int/. They're both completely different now.

I'm 24 now. I feel sort of old and I don't know why I'm still using this site. I barely even enjoy it anymore. I just cling onto hope that things will go back to the way they were when I first got here, but they won't.

>decline the last 5 years

Some would point to Chanology for the decline, I would say this site was doomed as soon as that Fox News report aired.

>>62436530

They leaked into /v/ all the time. Never saw them on /g/ or other boards.
>>
>>62436551
/v/ was always trash, it was one of the first boards to get janitors for a reason. So naturally having no mods and unskilled janitors anyone could post anything on /v/

banning desktop threds helped tremendously
too bad they let generals flood in like the circling jerking cucks that inhabited desktop threads weren't just going to spam those instead.

desktop threads are just a bunch of pedo spam by worthless sacks of shit who should die in a fire anyways. even the relentless spam from advertisers and poojeets aren't as bad as you children loving pedo shit sacks

i used o have the other image where the oldfag trollface was reversed.
how ironic considering the "cancer" troll face was the trollface long before the newfag one was ever around.
literally the only thing besides pokemon/cp i remember on /b when i briefly browsed back in 04
>>
>>62436561

/v/ wasn't trash at first, it just never had mods. moot didn't give a shit about /v/ and all the mods were hand-picked, like-minded people. You could report all of the shitposts and the mods would ignore it.

Meanwhile, if any rule on /a/ was broken at the same time, the mods would immediately rush in and delete it. You had to be some retarded 13 year old like Lanced Jack who had all the free time in the world to -just- shitpost in order to get through.

There was no "reason" /v/ became shit. moot just let it happen. Fast forward to '08 and he would literally say that /v/ was great because of all the /b/ shit going on in it. He never paid attention to the board until that.

/v/ would have probably turned into /vg/ regardless. Literally had to get to the 2nd page just to get non general threads.
>>
>>62436666

I think he's trying to say something like that the 100 Mass Effect thread marathon was fucking stupid and shouldn't have existed. There weren't named generals at that point, people just kept making a new Mass Effect thread when the old one died and would talk about nothing. They finally stopped once they got to the 100 mark.

It's one thing when people are talking about Starcraft non-stop. It's another when they're not, but still doing it in the Starcraft general.

>I have noticed a lot of programmers/coders looking at lower level languages as a sort of mythical beast that one day they'll tame but not now because... Have the days of cutting your teeth on C and Assembly passed? Have "enterprise level" languages REALLY become the norm, to the point that the majority of computer programmers have never manually debugged anything?

There's an inflated sense of how difficult programming is. There's this big poser element in silicon valley that I believe is bleeding into computer science and I think kids that come to /g/ are buying into into it. JavaScript devs call themselves "code artisans" on Twatter. They base their entire self worth off working with a framework made so some shit a 3rd world monkey can do add to the repo for pennis on the dollar.

This is one reason new kids need to actually read the SICP meme and actually understand how programs work. It's not a big fucking mystery. I legit saw a thread last week where anon asked /g/ if he should take an javascript code camp for 2000 dollars.

/v/ used to be even more full of porn than it is now and it was great. But now its normal to call someone a "degenerate anime poster" these faggots obviously weren't here in 4ch's hayday.

Also, was browsing a ylyl thread on /wsg/ the other day, somebody posts the making coloured crystals webm. Of 12 replies, 8 of them were either complaining about how "thats fucked up" or "that kills people why would you post this" while only 4 people didnt care or were here long enough to understand.

How does it feel to know that 2/3+ of this site is normalfags now?

>>

The catalog was a godsend because I didn't have to open several pages at once, then refresh them occasionally to find new threads. But it was a mistake as it made it easier for newfags to shit up 4chan. Popularity is what eventually killed 4chan. And nobody lurks moar anymore.

assuming they're not just retards larping as boomers, the cause of it may be 4chan gaining some notoriety in mainstream media during the 2016 election.

What I always find ironic about this image is that I joined around the 2012/2013 stage, but pretty much learned everything about reddit through here, and had little idea what it was before. I didn't even know how to navigate the site, but it's been a boogeyman so long, and brought up so often that eventually you learn about it. Stuff like the Tom Hardy QA for example.

These days I even find myself browsing reddit, but mostly just for sport news, not for discussion

I thought I remembered this. It's one of the things I used to like actually. Unfortunately I'm guilty of phonespeak these days too, it's more an attempt to fit with the times I guess.
I don't really see people being offended too often, other than maybe on boards like /co/ but even then, it's either baiting, or it's because it's /co/, which isn't called /co/mblr for nothing

We used to have more interesting threads when I started posting here in 2010. Now we have a fuckload of generals and we only discuss consumer electronics.

I think /csg/ is pretty cool in concept but I don't post in it, the one time I tried buying cheap shit from aliexpress the payment got declined
