Is it wrong that I don't care about smartphones at all? The only thing I find them useful for, besides making calls and texts, is gps and browsing the internet. I assume that's what most people use their phones for as well. Why, then, do people spend nearly $1000 for these things when there are smartphones that do the same thing for 1/10 of that price?
>>
>>62410776
Why do people spend $60000 on a car when a $12000 car will get them there the same? Why do people spend $20 on a meal when a 50¢ bowl of rice fills them up the same? Why do nice things exist? We should all live in poverty and stand in bread lines.

Hey guys, why do i feel like smartphone cameras are getting worse, at least outside the flagship line?

I guess i was mildly spoiled, for having a Moto X play, who despise being a intermediary, it had a premium sensor (Same one on X Pure/ X Force), but i just don't know.

Yes, it couldn't shoot 4k video or 1080p fps, but man, the difference in the still images are just unbelievable for the same price-tag. I was browsing some Z Play and Z2 Play/G5+ samples, and this is just depressing. Back on the beginning of the year, i was quite hyped for the g5+ aperture and all, promising a nice low-light performance and everything. The camera is solid, don't take me wrong, but it still don't come close to what the old X line had to offer.

Do i need to get a flagship these days if i want a solid camera performance? Any Z2 play/G5+ owners can give some input or toughs here?

Im almost buying a X Force at this point, same price as a z2 play in my country, but miles better in the camera.

Just thought I would give a warning. Had my note 8 about 48 hours a bit less and scuff marks have developed on the back. At the bottom edge especially the corners. The back of this is kind of bowed and it rests on that edge and corners. Did not even do something rough with it mostly stay in jeans pocket or on desk.

Really disappointed about this might try to buff it out or something but I just took a microfiber cloth to it I had lying around and its definetly scuffed into the body.

Ordered a case with prime shipping as soon as I got it and it is going to arrive in the next couple hours. Just a shitty case to keep me going till the good ones can be figured out.

Again I hate this bullshit super good looking super impractical design Samsung got infected with by apple.

Former iphone user here, thinking about making the jump to android.

The one thing that I'm hesitant about is security. From what I've heard, android security patches tend to be notoriously late compared to iOS, along with security policies being more lax.

Are any manufacturers better in this regard? I'm not sure if everyone handles different flavors of Android (since it's really linux) or if it's all more homogenized?

What has your experience been like with security in android phones? Any phone brands/Android flavors to avoid?
>>
>>62413142
One reason I am sticking with ios is, I figure google already has enough information on me, rather spread the risk out.
>>

Thinking about using my Amazon prime to get this because I want an upgrade for a reasonable price.
https://www.amazon.com/Moto-Plus-5th-Generation-Lockscreen/dp/B01NBRN2YI

If my old phone had forced bloatware attached, will that be transferred at all if I move the SIM card from my old smartphone to my new one? Sorry if the question sounds stupid, I've not used smartphones for very long.
>>
>>62413142

>>
>>62413142
I've never had a security problem but better safe than sorry I guess. Pixel gets updates fast and theoretically any device that ships with 8.0 and has project treble will get faster updates, but its an as-of-yet unproven tech.
>>
>>62413279
>root the SD
what do you mean? Root and SD cards are completely unrelated. But you're right, the Amazon Prime version can't be rooted because the bootloader is not unlockable.

> Should I bother shelling out the extra cash to have the non-bloatware version?
>Also, do you think the extra for 4GB is worth the extra cash?

The non-bloatware, 4GB RAM version is has been on sale for $230-250 from time to time. I'd wait until it's on sale again and get that version. 2GB isn't very much for a current smartphone.

Sorry, my knowledge with smartphones isn't very good, hoping to learn more about them once I get a better phone Basically, I read something along the lines of that you need to root your phone in order to be able to link your SD card and install apps easily on it. That's what I meant by "root the SD."
>>
>>62413378

LG G6 is on Nougat 7.1.1 or something but considering it's new it should get Oreo soon enough...
>>
>>62413301
huh the techradar review said it dies in a few hours and charges super slow but they might have got an outlier
and I'm not talking about a teardown battery replacement, in my s5 I just pop the battery out and add a new one
>>
>>62413398

For some applications, especially the annoying ones that won't move to the SD you will need to root your phone, not your SD card slot, in order to take advantage of apps that can safely transfer your apps to the SD card.

On stock Android only a few apps can be moved to the SD card without rooting the damn thing. So far I've found the following apps can be moved to the SD card without rooting your phone:

Twitch
Facebook
Facebook Messenger
Discord

Everything else wants to sit in internal storage for some reason.
>>

Yes, if you install the sd as part of the phone, wich Motorola allows in almost every device it launches lately, you don't have to worry about a app going or not to the sd card.

Just remember to buy a UFS-10 (If i remember correctly) card, because if the reading speed is slow on your sd, you will have problems and notice your phone being a bit slower (Depending on the card, significantly slower.)

>>
>>62414695
That's sad, LG usually do things right (When not bootlooping.)

I mean, i guess some manufacturers are afraid the phone would slow down too much if people install sd cards, especially the ones who already install a lot of bloatware on the device.

I guess Motorola can do this because they keep everything close to stock, it's the only reason i can come up with.

>>62414593
You would be able to install the SD, yes. If you can handle the ads, bite the bullet.

Honestly tough, part of what makes motorola phones charming and great to me, it's how they are really pure, like a Nexus, only adding QoL changes, like gestures and such.

You wouldn't have a REAL Moto experience, but, if money is short, go for amazon.

Is there any chance Xiaomi will be discontinuing the Mi 5s this year? They are on sale on GearBest, like 400 units each one for $259.99 + free shipping to my country. Thinking if it's worth it, don't really want to spend more than that and fuck screens bigger than 5.15". Should I just get it? I'm not really in need of an upgrade, currently using an old ZenFone 5 which is good enough save for the shitty battery life and camera (although I don't really use it that much), so I was going to wait until next year, but this current trending of screens getting bigger and bigger especially with top-end phones is worrisome for me.

Ok guys, i kinda got a Xiaomi MI 5C by doing some work for my cousin, and, well, back them i couldn't choose my phone, so i just rolled with it.

But i can't really like this thing. I would rather downgrade to some moto e4, but it just feels so wrong holding it and all. There's also no global rom, only a custom installation of google services, and that really sucks, as most of time i have to turn everything on again, especially ow the google now integration shuts down constantly because of this.

I had a moto x play, wich was destroyed by my little sister, and even tough the MI 5C should be an improvement over it (Except on build quality and camera), it feels so, so, so fuckin bad, i don't even use the phone that much nowadays, because of how depressing is navigating trough it.

Worse yet, new Motorola midrangers doesn't even have a capable camera compared to the X Play. I will probably just sell this phone and buy a new screen for my X Play, or try my luck with a Z2.

I know it's all a matter of taste, but i can't really grasp how you recommend Xiaomi phones around here. Maybe it's cheap, i get it, maybe the MI 5C is the problem, and other Xiaomi phones are good (After rooted, probably), but hell, this situation sucks major ass for me,

Sorry for the blog, it just really sucks being me right now.

Question:

Wich would you pick, Moto X Force, Z2 Play, Z Play, or G5+ ?

So my 2.5 year old Nexus 6 is dead, so I need to upgrade to something else. I want something with pure, unbloated Android (or as close to pure Android as possible), and preferably rootable/unlocked bootloader. I was thinking about just waiting for the inevitable Pixel 2 (XL), but I'm not sure when that'll finally launch. So the next things I'm leaning towards are the Essential Phone, the Moto Z2 Play, or the Oneplus 5. Anything particularly good or bad about these phones? Are there any other phones I should consider?

Also, I was thinking about just cheaping out and getting something like a Moto G or a chinkshit phone because I've been saving up to build a PC, and this unexpected phone emergency is gonna cut into my PC budget. But I'm conflicted, because I don't want to just deal with a shitty cheap phone for the foreseeable future.

You should keep on Samsung, their build is solid usually. Look for an A5/A7. If you're open to something new, One Plus 5, or the Z2 play. The latter would be the best, build-quality wise, because of the full metal body. Samsung ones are IP68, though.

But oh wait, it's 2017 and smartphones have become a fucking joke in general.

The display tipe also has a large influence on the battery life. Amoled usually makes a phone last longer.

Phones have different bands, Moto G family for example, are usually the best "trap" phones, because of the super large selection of banda, from CDMA to 4G, making It almost Impossible to not have signal.

But yeah, only notebookcheck reviews are good usually.

I'm actually considering buying the iPhone X because I been wanting a phone that isn't just android. My HTC One M9 is a literal dumpster fire. This thing is like holding hot cup of water for hours on end and the camera quality is garbage. The property software is everywhere like the bullshit ATT apps they preloaded and have to disable them in settings and do not plan to root because of my family photos and other important documents on my phone. The only good thing about this phone is the DAC and the speakers.

I love Android but I want to try iOS for a change and i do not care for the price, just want to try their new flagship, see how it is, if it shit I'll just return it for my money and get a Samsung note 8

The more I look at the iPhone X the more the design grows on me. The FaceID still worries me though.

At unreasonable LG prices. I really want that phone, but we all know in a few months it will have lost half its value. Look at the fucking G6: after not even five months it already sits at half the MSRP.

Now it's the bezels are too big, and the screen size is too small. 4.7-5 inch screens are perfect in my opinion, I hate all these phones getting bigger and bigger.
>>
Okay, here's a tough one

I currently have a Nokia OnePlus 2 on Cricket's GSM network (basically AT&T).

I don't have a real reason to upgrade, but is there any ~$400 phone with the following features?

>5.5" 2560x1440 screen
>good battery life
>good camera
>good speakers
>physical home button
>fast charging
>sd card slot
>>
>>62419641
You say that like it's a bad thing. Wait a short period of time, save a good chunk of money on a great phone. Sounds good to me.

I'm just waiting to see people review it and determine if it's actually living up to the quality people talk about.
>>
Ok /g/ I'm upgrading my iPhone 5. What should I go for? iPhone 7, 7+, 8, 8+ or the X?

8+ if you don't like the weird screen gimmick on the X
Otherwise the X
Unless it's too expensive for you in which case I guess just pick based on your budget.

I can afford the X so money isn't a problem. I don't really have a problem with the notch as the design is growing on me. The current iPhone designs are a bit stale so this change is nice. The loss of touchID and gesture based operation is what concerns me the most.

>You say that like it's a bad thing. Wait a short period of time, save a good chunk of money on a great phone. Sounds good to me.
It's a bad thing if you're an early adopter: I just don't know how long my phone will hold up, and honestly I don't know how long I'll tolerate my old phone.
>I'm just waiting to see people review it and determine if it's actually living up to the quality people talk about.
Me too, I'm especially worried about battery life and overall fragility: I wouldn't want to have to buy a cover just to make it survive a few falls.
>>
>>62419871
Battery life is probably my only real concern with it (for now)

>not buying a cover
Yeah yeah, I know
>dropping your phone
But still
They're cheap and considering the pricetag of the phone itself I'd rather be safe than sorry

Though I am curious, how durable do you expect a phone to be? Because most seem pretty shitty in that regard, probably by design.

Fuck Samsung. Seriously, I've been using their shit for like four years now and I'm so goddamn sick of their absolute garbage.
I can't wait for this phone I've got currently to drop dead so I can justify throwing it the fuck out and buy something halfway decent.
>>
>>62419904
>They're cheap and considering the pricetag of the phone itself I'd rather be safe than sorry
It's not a matter of money, but rather of form factor.
>buy a phone with minimal bezels
>that trades battery life for slimness
>add bezels and bulk with a case/cover/whatever
>>
>>62415291
Lg v30
>>
>>62419938
I'm buying the phone for the internal specs, not the bezels.
I guess I get where you're coming from, but I personally have never really given a shit about bezels. Or form factor for that matter. My previous phones have been bricks.

This is also why I'm concerned about the battery life.
>>
>>62419989
>I'm buying the phone for the internal specs, not the bezels.
But here's the thing: that phone, set aside the DAC, has the very same specs of all the other flagships and many chinkphones, and whatnot. I don't see why going for a phone like that when there are a lot more other options that are cheaper and more durable, if not for the design.

Nokia 8, to begin with. Seems much sturdier, and will be much cheaper, OnePlus5 also is similar in terms of build and price (but should be readily available), then Sony Xperia XZ Premium, aluminum unibody, but at a heftier price.
