The 8 is literally the 7S. It is an upgrade to the 7 in most ways but it doesn't bring anything new enough to the outside to warrant another digit change, unless you count going back to glass backs.

The design in the X is awkward and clunky, It really show's how little confidence they had with this new design by making it an option instead of the norm, the iPhone 8 feel's more like the iPhone 7s.
