Whatever happened to clustered computing?

It was the /nextbigthing/ in the 80s and 90s.

Tell us what you think clustered computing is
>>
The 8086 is superior to modern Intel CPUs
>>
Multicore multi socket x86 and GPGPU happened. Most "supercomputers" are still HPC clusters.
>>
i'm literally running commands on a research computing supercluster right now

Uh, it's in production now. You know, all those various storage / processing cloud things? Apart from the ones operating 'internally' behind web pages there are also dozens of major providers like Amazon, Google, Rackspace, Backblaze, Heroku, ... you can buy processing power / storage from.

Clusters are obsolete, just get a Quantum Computer.
>>
>>62384124
PS: You can also get a good bunch of the internal software.

Apache Spark & Cassandra & their ecosystem, OpenStack and its ecosystem, Twitter's various open sauce projects and a lot more... lots of software stacks and frameworks for clusters of computers.

They didn't do away. The terminology changed.

It's more often called "cloud" or "distributed" or whatever computing now. Still ultimately the same thing, except they changed the wording because I guess company bosses associated "cluster" computing with specialized hardware managed by experts. Whereas the cloud stuff is generally working fine with mostly generic, non-specialized hardware and automates most of its organization.

Billions of dollars flow into it, huge congresses are held for individual frameworks like Spark, interest is definitely NOT low.
>>
>>62384342
By the way, the people making hardware decisions for companies and running clouds also won't be constantly googling "cluster computing" or such. They'll generally just develop their projects and buy more hardware.

You're probably better off gauging this by things like github activity on related open sauce projects or such.

wow that was hard

Actually I'm studying quantum computers and using IBM Q sometimes, I was being ironical because this is a faggot-ass post.
Clusters and distributed computing will always be needed as long as we can think, they were the most important achievement for the science in probably all the history.
I don't know were the OP as been trough all these years.
