Wait what the fuck is SVP?
I just randomly heard about it and apparently can make movies appear 60 or even 120 fps. Is it legit? What can /g/ tell me about it? What are the drawbacks?

Interpolation done right (ie not the hardware shit they put in modern tvs).
Though it's still shit for movies (artifacts) I recommend it for animu.
>>
>>62350539
Drawbacks:
>articulating like on the credit text there
>minor distortions on some shapes sometimes
>can't handle it the entire scene moves very erratically
>very high CPU usage

Some people say that the SVP 60FPS doesn't look "natural" compared to true 60FPS video. I think they're either 30FPS tardlets or they're talking about live-action stuff.

For animation, interpolation between keyframes is consistent with how it's actually made so the results are often very good, minus the artifacting of course.
>>
will mpv devs ever implement something as smooth as svp
>>
>>62350643
Artificial motion interpolation can never be as smooth as a real 60 fps playback
>>
>>62350617
I should also point out that technically what it does is not interpolation, it doesn't blend adjacent frames, but predicts the direction of the movement or something like that.

>>62350643
Svp can run on mpv. Actually, on Linux even the free version can.
>>
>>62350663
Not true, svp can. The drawback is artifacts
>>
>>62350663
Maybe not as detailed in terms of animation. Any object that scrolls without morphing will be just as smooth though.

>never
We got a time walker here guys.

>There will never be artificial light
>There will never be mobile devices for communication
>There will never be x

Sounds like the dynamic frame insertion that a lot of TVs have built in. It tends to look like shit with certain types of content like films shot at 24fps, because the algorithm doesn't have enough data to accurately produce enough frames and the video ends up bouncing around everywhere.
Basically it analyzes the video content ahead of time and creates in-between frames through prediction, but these are false frames that are just the blend of the previous and next frame.
The same principles can be applied to make 2D content appear 3D by separating motion into layers. The only difference is that if adaptive enhancement works best on stationary content, 3D enhancement works better when there a lot of motion for the codec to determine what it can split up.

>artificial light
You mean fire?

>mobile devices for communication
You mean like a radio? Something based on physical properties which hadn't been discovered until just a few centuries ago?

Or perhaps you mean like pen and paper?

What kind of retard thinks that anything is possible with technology?

TV's have been having SVP like effects since forever.

Normal people don't even mind them.

Manufacturers market it as a feature.

This whole people not liking "soap opera" effect is a bunch of bullshit.
>>
>>62350794
99.9_% of TVs can't handle anything like SVP. What they implement is completely different.
