I don't

Swaps mostly. Last CRT I got was exchanged for an IBM 5150 keyboard via a (local) forum, the one before was swapped for an 8" FDD. Australian thrift stores do not stock electronics anymore because liability, but a lot of US ones still do apparently.

Thrift stores, garage sales or Craigslist

it's crazy isn't it? just a few years ago, people were dumping them on the curb and you could pick it up for free on craigslist
also, I see a trend where everything is becoming waaay overpriced on ebay and amazon. the price gouging and greed disgusts me.
pic related. yes, that's a paper street map, and it's US dollars.

Because everyone realized they were obsolete tech and switched over to the better, cheaper alternative and therefore threw theirs away, destroyed it, or scrapped it for parts.

Wrong. A 120hz CRT monitor could be had for like $5. With decent colors.
Find an electronic recycler in your area. I work for one and we have to pay fucking outragous prices to dump these things. The one time some guy came in looking for some (to refurb arcade machines) we dumped as many as he'd take on him.

Local sales sites.
They go for 5€ usually.
Nice LaCie and NEC professional monitors and consumer RGB SCART / PAL60 Trinitron TVs.
There's plenty of them.

why is this street map so expensive?
