Prior to the 1900s, you often had 3 generations living under one roof, with kids and couples sharing rooms. Now it's expected that once you turn 18 you're on your own, and living under your parents roof is seen as a bit of a failure.

I really don't think it should be seen as such, due to the economic realities previously discussed, and in a few more years, it probably won't seem too far out of the norm.

I, personally, couldn't stand living with my parents as an adult, but I do just fine in an apartment shared with a roommate.
