they only have the cloud computing business because they were looking for a solution to the problem of hemorrhaging money paying for the servers to run the business selling goods, so this isn't really an answer to the OP's question as much as it is a circular statement.

as for the OP, my understanding is that they do make a profit, but even if they're not, establishing themselves as the place to go for everything is lucrative in itself. if they make a smaller profit on all of the products they sell, but they can consistently sell more things, then they still come out way ahead. and knowing everything about you (from advertising and tracking, which they do as much as microsoft, google, etc...), then they can upsell you on lots of random shit that you didn't know existed but is a close match for something you would like/want.

not him, but it depends on how you border things off. i'm not sure what metric you happen to prefer, but i don't know of any that leaves amazon out of the top 3.

They have tens to hundreds of billions of dollars of liquid assets (your payments) that won't be called in for ~6 weeks - they make money like any other stock broker, except they have tens of billions to play with.
