What's the oldest computer virus you can recall having on your PC?
>>
I don't know but I recall my antivirus catching over 1000 viruses on my computer when I scanned it for the first time, and deleting half of my games because of it.
>>
Windows, until my good friend Richard Stallman told me it was malware at that I should be using a FSF-approved distribution of GNU/Linux instead
>>
russian porn dialers. remember my dad got mad and had to reinstall windows
>>
I was like 12 at the time, and eventually killed it by formatting. No clue what it was called. It killed performance but not much else. The system was still mostly usable. That was my introduction to safe pirating and the best firewall/anti-virus around, Common Sense. Been using it to great effect ever since.

Also for OP's, as a temporary fix couldn't you just abort the shutdown via command prompt?

In 2004 there was this malware called "lop" or some shit that would put icon links to surveys on your desktop and you couldnt delete it.
At first, you had to use something like HijackThis to get rid of it then stuff like Spybot S&D and AdAware could remove it.

Got one when I browsed porn sites. I was 14 at the time and was scared shitless that my parents would find out that I watch porn. Managed to remove it somehow with google and safe mode within a couple of hours.

I know that feel. When I was a kid, I was also panicking about the FBI showing up to my house to arrest me for looking at porn when I got one of those porn eraser ads.

I remember my Mom getting a virus that made all the icons "run away" from the mouse pointer so you couldn't click on them. This was in the late 90s I believe.

But I did do some research on it recently and found out that it was quite likely the "magistr" virus, which turns out to have a really fascinating story behind it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoYkbKBlbQk

by the way this youtube channel is a total gem. Just some dude who has a hobby of collecting computer viruses, from DOS to Windows 10, and documenting them on his channel.

The supposed "Free Coca-Cola Cup Holder"
if you downloaded it, supposedly you would get a free cup-holder.
so an ad popped up out of nowhere and you'd be forced to click the "i want my cup-holder!" button.
i remember pissing myself cuz i was a normie and didn't know what that'd do to my pc

it just opened your disk tray
