It looks good though.

I fucking hated that goddamn "shiny" phase everything went through in the 2000s.

Le minimalism le flat design is only a problem when people start applying it to logos and buttons and things, which is I assume why those people were slower. Muh minimalist solid colour buttons. Just give it a drop shadow and bevels or something at least.

But no otherwise solid colour superior design scheme.

well that describes material, which is shit.

what is desperately needed is a return to basic ui principles. consistency should be the rule, boundaries should be visible, and different types of controls (e.g. buttons versus tabs versus links) should be easy to tell apart. on platforms where tooltips are unavailables (touchscreens), text buttons or GOOD icons should be favoured over tiny 2-tone icons.

I want my UI as uncluttered, functional, and easy as possible. Using all 4 billion colours is for my desktop wallpaper and multimedia. The UI itself should be clean and stay out of my way.

That's why I'm fine with flat. Some new fucking meme is going to take over soon and make it all look like cluttered shit again anyway. Transparency will probably come back, or things will start lightly pulsating and gyrating on the screen or some "innovative" bullshit.

windows 95 was the last time they made an effort on anything UI-related, 95 was excellently made ui-wise
everything since then has just been them shitting up the 95 ui a little bit at a time (then a lot with 8)

Flat is worthless. I agree. A decent interface has clear controls. Some people go too far and they don't even have borders or lines separating anything. The new youtube design removes almost anything but videos and comments and the sections aren't clearly separated, it's really crappy.

But nah keep thinking that design is for faggots and that all you need is something like Windows 10 (I feel bad for Microsoft for having to actually pay a person to do anything involved with the design, they actually should be paid for shitting up such an OS)

macOS currently looks nice even though it hasn't changed for years now.

Windows on the other hand...

>Windows 7
Default theme sucks, there's a lot of people who love the glass shit now, I can understand the appeal of classic themes but this is just being pretentious. You have to rice it otherwise why bother.

>Windows 8.1
People over here are going to dislike this opinion a lot but I think it looks quite decent and clean, despite the start menu being full screen and all. I Like the borders. It's not just too flat, elements are still fairly clear. I guess the whole ribbon UI thing pisses people off too

>Windows 10
The pinnacle of garbage. When it stopped being a beta it still felt like alpha. Really inconsistent, really simplistic, you notice they did not put effort on it and besides it's not exactly too pleasant to look at. They took the "flat" quite literally. And the worst thing is, unlike the previous 2 systems it keeps changing constantly and never being finished, and everytime there's a big update it breaks all of your shit if you happen to want to use a different visual style or something like that.

Can be fast if icons are well defined.

the post you responded to illustrated something that is being used quite frequently which is to try to make every icon a little bit more similar to the point they're hard to differentiate (colors are very important, but they do away with that notion because they think that people only remember shapes and everything else doesn't matter).

It's just easier to remember (and to quickly reach) a unique icon per application.

Thing is people could do that on 8.1 just fine, but they still complained about the start menu. If you don't want the animation and feel it's slow you could just disable it too.

When 8 came out I read somewhere that Microsoft claimed that most people they tracked rarely used the start menu in most cases, and I guess it all depends on what you use, but if you spend a lot of time using the same 2 to 3 applications, yeah, it might not be just that frequent. Specially when you have a desktop and a taskbar to pin programs on.

>never had to operate in a productivity-intensive environment in his virgin life

My primary workstation is dual monitor, one is 27" 2560x1440 and the other is portrait 24" 1200x1920. Typically, I have between 5 and 20 windows open in various states of tiled and layered, and several of those windows (such as browsers and editors) can have from 5 to 20 tabs open.

Flat design is for fucking mongoloid retards that can barely manage two simultaneously open windows. When you have a desktop as busy as mine, it becomes impossible to distinguish between windows and applications within seconds and you end up thrashing around wasting time continuously trying to figure out which window is active, or which one you're trying to access.

Flat design is for smart phone kiddies, not workstation environments. I'm surprised they are only seeing a 22% drop in efficiency. I guess very little of their sample uses a workstation the way I described, because when I was forced to a flat design (Win10), my productivity probably dropped by 50% in pure wasted time.

>you know damn well that's not happening when downgrading is difficult
I use linux + windows 7 vms, and a win7 laptop.
What issues do you have with downgrading? Its not like its xbox where you literally cant downgrade without a jtag. Just put your files on a different harddrive and install whatever os you want. My win7 vm can handle everything including vr games (with the except for vr desktop because muh win10 desktop capture libraries)
>let alone asking normies to do it
My grandmother would still be on 98 if society let her. If I offered her swiss cheese xp she would accept in a heartbeat.

>every piece of new hardware you buy today comes with it
last I checked (years ago) you could buy laptops preloaded with ubuntu that cost less because there is no windows licensing involved. These laptops are not locked to ubuntu, you can install whatever you want including win7. There may be issues with >= kabby lake cpus because of the lack of drivers but that might not even be an issue.
