mpc-hc has built-in 98% of most codecs you'll ever encounter when playing media files. vlc has 99.8% of them.

the addition of codecs in mpc-hc was gradual over the years, so some people (especially codec pack users) may not have noticed.

Unfortunately MPC-HC is being abandoned, although it's still probably the best media player for Windows. I'm used to using deprecated software, used Winamp for years after it went under. Would still use it had automatic artwork downloads still.

MPC-HC has been unofficially abandoned for almost two years only getting components updates like lav filters, etc and fixing regressions created by those updates, yet it still remains the best player.
Since you can just use external Lav Filters, MPC-HC will still be the best player for years to come since it is pretty much feature complete, someone even figure out how to use youtube-dl with it in the doom9 forums.

Either use stock codecs built-in MPC-HD or VLC, or just get ffdshow for everything else. Codec packs are just bloated and filled up with vomitware, ffdshow replaces all of that with a nice open source universal decoder with tons of advanced options that can really come in handy with poorly encoded or synced stuff.
