I'm noticing a recurring problem with a lot of software repositories where their versions are outdated like 90%.
Why don't people update the dang versions in their repositories?
Am I just gonna have to build everything from source?
Install Arch
They don't expect anyone to actually use their shit, it's just material for your CV

Which repos are you looking at? Some repos prefer "stability".

The specific case that got me kinda miffed was gcc being at 4.8 on red hat. I'm sure it's in the name of stability but it kinda blows when I go to do a cmake and it's complaining about features that aren't in this version.

if you mean a distros repositories, well the distro maintainers decide what and what version goes into the repo and when/if an update is added to the repo, not the actual software maker

Source? Image search only finds this same crop on imageboards.
