Redpill me on short travel switches. I can get either Cherry G84-4100 mini or Logitech G410 tkl tomorrow. Apparently both Cherry ML or Romer-G are tactile and have 3mm travel. I'm aware that neither have custom keycaps, but I need a workhorse not a "looker".
>>
>>62174221
unless there's a particular reason you want short travel switches, why miss out on more tactility and the ability to use custom keycaps?

I'm looking for a compact keyboard and thus far I've learned this:
>Cherry MX and clones are meme and shit. Worst mechanical switches but got the clown parade going for them. Also, either 60% or gaming garbage.
>Alps/Matias are meme and shit. "Nicer" but suffer from chatter and key rattling, have no decent compact keyboards.
>Topre are meme and shit. Overpriced rubber dome. Home of overpriced 60% meme that started it all.
So, with this negativity around, I might as well go esoteric.
>>
>>62174221
Why not get a keyboard with cherry ML clones?
>>
How much impact do o-rings have on the sound of switches? It'd do virtually nothing for clicky ones like blues, right? Since it's just muffling the bottoming out

Kailh low profile are better than Cherry ML and come in linear, tactile and clicky flavours instead of ML's scratchy tactile only.
>>
>>62175104
Hmm, mostly because the idea as a whole struck me late last night, and I wasn't aware of them. But availability might be the issue.

>>62175302
Aside from existence of the switches themselves, are there any keyboards that use them? Searching aliexpress with "Kailh pg1350" and "Kailh pg1458" gives nothing.

That's the only one I found for "low profile this and that", but that jewtube review sells it well and it's much better priced than that Cherry I wanted. But what are Kailh Blue, clicky-tactile? Switch connoisseurs on jewtube only speak about brown, red and white.
>>
>>62175873
If you're talking about the low profiles, they only come in red brown and white. Red is linear, brown is tactile and white is clicky.
>>
>>62175083
Some clone switches, such as gaterons, are actually smoother than cherry.

They're clicky/tactile. Kailh is supplying the white low profile switch in blue to OEMs because hipsters equate blue with clicky and not white.

So I jumped in on the XDA Godspeed groupbuy. I am going to either rebuild my ergodox or buy one.

Two Questions though.

1.) Has anyone figured out/made instructions for RGB underlighting of an ergodox?

I had some nornal LED strips on mine for awhile, but rhey were extremely bright and would stay on even if the pc was off so I removed them.

2.) Can I order an ergodox ez with greens?

It has the underlighting but doesn't seem to have an mx green varient. Desoldering and then resoldering 76 switches would be a pain in the ass, so I doubt I will buy one if not.

>>

>>
>>62177477
Thanks for the link anon. The cost to have clear switches on this board is an extra $23, so I think I am just going to end up going with the Ducky One.
>>
>>62177501
I'd go with browns desu, i have clears on my numpad, and i couldn't imagine typing on them all day.
>>
>>62177512
Clears only feel heavy when you bottom them out regularly.
Once you're used to feathering them (it's fairly easy due to light actuation and stiff bottom out) you won't fatigue your fingers while also reducing noise.
>>
>>62177512
Oh boy. Now I'm getting conflicting responses. I hear that browns feel "sandy" or "dirty" from the very light tactile feedback, that is one of the reasons to get clears: a good amount of tactile feedback. Is that your experience?
>>
>>62177473
It's pretty good but do some research before you buy it to make sure you'll like it.
>>
>>62177531
Imagine browns as having sand stuck in the switch and clears having a pebble shoved inside. If you still can't make sense of it, buy a switch tester.
>>
>>62177531
they're very tactile, there is a definite bump at the actuation point, but the force required is a bit hard on the fingers.

it's all personal preference.

Regardless, I have the Varmilo MR87VA and think it's a great keyboard.
>>
>>62177547
Clears also have a significantly stiffer spring.

>>
>>62177531
Most people who use brown switches end up getting rid of them and start using a proper linear or tactile switch like red or blue. Brown switches feel like someone spilled sand on your keyboard.
>>
>>62177491

Apollo Text Ergo and Apollo Text Tsangan.

Oh and the Planetary thing too.

>>62177481

Thanks mans, I had no idea it was there. Hopefully it uses a normal PCB.
>>
>>62177531
Pretty much this >>62177553
But Clears are extremely sandy and rough, but a lot of it will smooth out over time.
I've had my Ergodox with MX Clears for around a week now and the alpha keys are already noticeably smoother.
Anyone who says that Browns feel sandy or gritty has never tried Clears. They are still miles ahead of that Brown trash though.

>short travel switches

Go to a physical store that has these keyboards on display and try them out.

I can tell you that I personally find it way too easy to mistype on those switches. It think it has as much to do with the low key-press resistance as it has to do with the short travel distance. I just can't use those keyboards. Perhaps I could use boards like that just for gaming if I got used to them?

The real question is what you will like and find comfortable and nobody on the Internet can tell you. This is why I recommend that you go to an actual physical store (or someone you know who has these) and try them out. There really is no other way to determine what you will enjoy.

>The sound of bottoming out is louder
This.

The impact on the sound of the switches themselves is zero, blue clicky switches will click like they always do. It's that "clunk" sound of bottoming out the keys the few times you do that which goes away.

O-rings are specially useful on brown switches because the switches themselves are very quiet but the "clunk" sound of bottoming out the keys can be very loud on some boards.

Some really don't like o-rings. For me it's almost a requirement for using a keyboard. You'll have to figure out what you prefer.

I'm not sure, the only one I've used is the Mechmini, and I found it a bit too limited with only having 27 alpha keys. I think this is probably what I'd want the most out of a 40-something, but the JD45 might be workable if I program the key next to enter to be ' " on the top layer with ; : on the function layer, since I use those two a lot less.

I recently bought Gateron blues and had the same impression listening to a naked, unmounted switch.

Main use would be: programming, typing. No gaming at all.
Limitations: I live with another person, and clicky noises are an issue. I figured cheery brown's equivalent would be nice, but i'm not familiar with either cherry or khali (?). As I said, i'm typing on a T420.

Numkey part would be nice to have, I have space on the desk and I do miss the number keys on the thinkpad (bookkeeping a lot).

You couldn't scale that tho. A custom, complex one off mold is always expensive no matter what. The tooling for the steam controller was like a million bucks. Of course you can do it for less, but you could never scale it as fast.

All the resistance is at the top of the keystroke, which really can't be done with MX style switches. Bottoming out is softer, both in sound and feel. Don't have to hammer on them either because like MX switches, they actuate mid-press.

I bought this keyboard for work. It's surprisingly comfortable and feels quite solid for this price point.
Feels good.

Downsides:
- print scrn led didn't work ootb but I don't really care
- (obviously) you can't find replacement keycaps easily and the included ones are not the best quality (about what you'd expect for this price)
- the cable, while detachable, is hard to replace - most normal microusb cables won't fit as there's a collar around the port.

I like them. Smooth, low wobble.
Bronze is essentially cherry blues, I can't tell them apart. Maybe a little smoother if you hit a corner.
The whites are the whites are linear but with tactile feedback. It's weird, but the little click bar send vibration/shock waves through the switch so it feels slightly clicky, but it is linear. Both are nice

>>
>>62195066
File dispute with reason being that the goods are substantially not as described.
Refuse to pay anything out of pocket for their mistake, such as return shipping. This includes paying ahead of time and having them reimburse you later, unless you have some sort of protection like escrow or a guarantee from the facilitator (assuming ebay here). Make sure that you unquestionably demand this.
If he sends you a return shipping label or otherwise pays for it in a secure manner that ensures you'll safely get your money back, you return it. Don't be a dick.
Optionally also leave feedback that's actually useful for others. You shouldn't someone 1 star if they handle the situation professionally, but you also shouldn't cover up their carelessness with glowing 5 star feedback.

There was something about Romer-G breaking easily, at least some anon fell for them and a few days later complained that a button won't hold in its place. There was something about keycap quality too, their edges wear off over time and the light will shine through.

You'll probably get used to it in a week.

>$150
The only reason I was considering it is because it is only $20 more than a ducky one with mx clears if I order from kdbfans it is $60 more.

Yea, Zealios is overpriced shit sold by a scammer, what did you expect?

If you can wait until December, getting a Zealios board under $110 is pretty good, especially since it's definitely going to reach its lowest price.

Scammer or some sleazy businessman who ordered Gaterons in custom colour and managed to force them into meme?

I was just following the guide, but "overpriced shit sold by a sleazy businessman that forced Gateron into an exclusive contract" doesn't sound as appealing.

Seeing him sell those "Tealios" that are nothing more than overpriced Gateron Yellows is definitely a giant scam though, but of course that doesn't stop Reddit from sucking his dick and buying whatever he shits out.

What are those in the bottom row? Can't read the imprint

I've been a pretty big blue shill but now that I own a black board I think they are actually superior as a general use switch.
Something to keep in mind, give a heavy linear a shot you might love it.

Chink variant is cheaper, comes with more switch choices, swap-able case, programmable and back lit.

I've got a chink clone with the same layout, except with gateron blue switches. Pretty much if you use vim like keys for everything from your text editor to your window manager, it's almost a non issue. The function (fn) key allows you to use { : " / as your arrow keys if you need them.

The esc, backspace, super/win and ctrl key positions are what sold me on the layout. Feels a lot nicer to type on once you get used to the layout.

The only complaint I have is there should be another function key on the other side of the keyboard.

Bought a mechanical keyboard.

Waste of fucking money, imo. If I didnt have money to spare on shit like this I would be pretty upset.

I came from a microsoft sidewinder x4 which I still think is better but now refuse to use because I spent fucking 200$ on this shit.

Are you >>62186497? What did you get? What caused your grief?
In any case, welcome to the club. Now, start taking pics of your shiny clean keyboard and go tell membrane losers to switch to mechanical while secretly sporting a sidewinder.

would nail polish do the trick? my kb has a tiny paint scratch

You're better off with enamels or acrylic model paints. Lacquers like nail polish can dissolve plastic.
